Morning all
I have been toying with the idea of building my own land lacht for beach use, and I see there is a wealth of knowledge on this forum. I'm a 31 y.o father of 4 y.o twins, and live just a little over 1km from a very quiet beach in Hervey Bay, QLD.
Before i go any further with design or building, or finding materials, I have a few questions I'm sure someone here can help me with
1. do land lachts need to be registered (considering mine will have no road use - only beach)
2. I have no sailing knowledge, where is the best place to learn (I'd prefer to make my own mistakes and learn, but a little help initially will help out!)
3. Is there a central area on this site, or a wiki somewhere on the basics of the rigging setup for sailing - also the basics of sailing one of these "into" the wind.
Sorry about all the questions, but I like to know what I am getting myself into!
cheers,
Brett

Gudday Brett, a big warm welcome to Seabreeze and the fellas here. You will find all the info you need within the forum to build your sandyacht.
To answer your questions :
1, No you dont need to register them here .
2, The best place is a quiet beach and there are people close to you who I am sure will help you personally. The first major obstacle is getting over the total sheer terror of the first 5 minutes, from then on it's all absolute joy and excitement that never ends.
3, Read Landyachts excellent post/s on building a Lake Lefroy Mini. All the info you need will be found there, also, a lot of your learning will be from getting out on the beach and having a go.
Please ask all the questions you want, there is no such thing a dumb question and everyone will help you.
Looking forward to photos of your landyach as you build it.

Thanks Kody

Will check that out - I did take a look earlier but the kids wanted me to play with them for a while (always good fun!)
When i get something that is sea (beach?) worthy I'll post some piccy's.
If i damage myself I'll also post some piccys!

The lefroy mini building thread will guide you in the chassis/seat part, then there are threads on recutting sails ,and the boom and sheeting.
the sailing side of things is really just a case of get in and go. the reason I put up plans for the mini is that its not only the easiest thing Ive built, but also the easiest to sail. the foot steering is about the same as hand steering in terms of learning to do it. Once you are closer to being in a reday to sail state you may jus find others in your area with yachts, if you keep us posted on this site. there are many sailors , not just landsailors who keep an eye on who's building where

Hi guys
Thanks for the replies.
Sooo keen on this now, plus a buddy who has sailed for some time (water that is) is keen too. He'll help me with some pulley's etc.
I have enough of the RHS i need for the build in the shed (left over's from my uncle closing his business 6 months ago) with the exception of the "gal fence post" for the centre beam.
With regards to the wheels, I have looked at Fallshaw website, but cannot put my finger on the wheel to get as per Paul's instrustions - I am assuming the 400X8KNO
-PWA10 model? Does this come as the full unit (tyre, rim, bearing)? Where do i get the 6204 bearing as mentioned? Should i buy a few? Are the plain bearings no good / unsealed?
I do have some left over old (read: very old) ride on mower wheels with bearings, but one bearing has 1/2" side to side play on the shaft!
While with wheels, would a BMX wheel for the front be the go, or should i go for another fallshaw jobby?
Also, when choosing a wind surf sail, should i go for the biggest i can find and cut down?

Once again thanks in advance for answering my barrage of questions.
cheers,
Brett

final sail size should be around 4m for a 80 kg person add 1/2m for bigger , drop 1/2m for kids.. If you find a candidate sail send us a photo and we can give advice. 16" bmx would be fine for te front but you will need to redesign your fork toa double sided fork. the Qld minis have done that a bit
the fallshaws should be available with a 6204 setup from the supplier, in both steel andplastic but the best tyre the come with is the KNO tyre. you will need to replace this once you get better at sailing.
re the fence post material , you may have to spend the cash. our steel supplier sells this type of galtube in precut lengthsfor fence posts

Hi Brett, Welcome to the forum.

If you go to your local metal recycling yard they will probably have street sign posts that they get from the council or main roads after the have been knocked over or have otherwise become unuseable as sign posts.

You will find this material just perfect for the job and quite cheap.

If you have trouble finding material in Hervey Bay or Maryborough come up to Bundaberg for a quick trip one day as I know it is here. While you are here you can have a decko at my Lefoy Mini that I recently built and if it is windy you can even have a ride.

You are only an hour and a bit away. Private Mail me if you want to come up.

We even have a sailmaker here with a good loft. Cheers Cisco.

Hi guys
Just had some prices emailed to me for wheels - $55+gst for the 400x8kno's, they can supply with 6005 bearings for extra (i suppose i'll have to get them to requote).
Paul recommends a 6204 bearing? Is this one of these:
http://www.directpoolsupplies.com.au/prod60.htm?utm_source=getprice&utm_medium=cpc
I assume from the photo this is a sealed bearing - two required per hub??
So these can just be pressed (tapped/belted with a drift and rubber mallet) into the plastic hubs? Or is there machining needed?
I do have a wood lathe if required.
Cisco - thanks for the offer and would love to come up, but the next few weekends are a little busy. I'm going to look around locally for some bits, shouldn't have many dramas getting what i need (as he eyes off the giveway sign up the road - HAHAHA j/k'ing) plus we are going to the Gold Coast in about a month, so I'll see many sail / surf shops there.

Brett,
In Bundaberg Wilson's Enterprises sells the Fallshaw wheels for $44 INCLUDING GST. The 6204 bearing adapters they sell for $5.20 a pair.

The crappy wheel barrow bearings that come with the standard wheel cost $5 at BSC but Fallshaw probably get them for $1.

I think the wheels can be ordered from Fallshaw with the adapters and 6204 bearings fitted.

Yes, those are the sealed bearings you want and $6.50 each is a good price.

So, you should be able to buy the wheels with adapters and 6204 precision bearings for $62.20 incl GST. Have a word to your supplier if he wants you to shop locally.

Yes, your wood lathe will be required for some little jobs I have to be done.

Fitting of the bearings, particularly if using the 6204 bearings and adapters will require a press consisting of a 20mm bolt of sufficient length with a nut and a pair of washers.

Hey Cisco
Thanks for the price check . That is not local - actually Bundy is more local than these guys (gold coast) I used to live there a couple of years ago, and i know of the place thats all. More than happy to call Wilsons and have a chat.
The old wood lathe is one my old man made me almost 20 years ago - very good generally - never tried anything of accuracy on it but. The only dust on it these days is from it sitting still - though I might try and make a plastic sleeve for the steering arm. See how it comes out.

Well Joe is talking about building an LLF Mini for his better half. So there could be a collective bulk buy of aluminium for masts coming up.

That of course is assuming we can get the RIGHT specs for the intended masts.

If we are going to build and promote these LLF Minis that originated on the other side of the continent, we would want them to be as good as they can possibly be so that they can at least put up a credible performance against the locally produced "P" class yachts wouldn't we??

Any ideas on that landyacht??
