Does the LLF mini comply with the FISLY 5.6m rule? And by how much? Before I start carving up lumps of not so cheap metal (I have to buy it all in new).

And will this stuff do for the main chassis tube -
Size: 2" (50.80mm) x 2.50mm wall
Material: Stainless Steel 304L (1.4301) Welded Tube. Strangely I can get hold of this stuff cheaper than mild steel with a 2mm wall. 3mm wall is horrendously priced.

Both my minis were built to LLF specs as to wheelbase and track which is the same as
Blokart I believe
They fit within the 5.6 measurement which was made to be an inclusive measurement to include this size of landyacht
Both of them were made with 52x2 mm exhaust tube and they have been well tested
with heavyweight pilots with no problems
The stainless 304l should be slightly stronger than exhaust tube so I would say go for it Cheers

Thanks mate. That answered everything nicely. Best start stockpiling in the corner of the shed ready for a build.

Thanks Col

Col,
You can Blame the bloody Chinese for the cost of Mild Steel and any other Steele for that matter.. They are stripping Australia of its mineral resources as fast as we can mine it.. Steel is poison here as well and we have the world resources---------just about.. Business is no longer about getting product out cheap but about the Big Multinationals ripping the guts out of all and sundry..
You got it, we want it. Gime your money and F off.

Thanks Paul. I've just found some 2" x 2mm wall mild steel for the same money but welded seam again. Problem I have these days is companies won't give up their offcuts like they used to. I used to raid scrap bins in exchange for a couple of pints and a bag of chips - now it's all weighed in, so I get charged enough for an invoice to be worthwhile raising I reckon a LLF will cost me £250 to build - a Potty is about £850 and an X-sail/blowkart over £1200 so I'm still quids in

Cheers Col

(I was going for a pierced lug style mast strap )

Hi Col The same problem with suppliers applies here which is why I went to exhaust tube
The local exhaust shop had a range of sizes and would cut it and charge for what I took Its welded tube BTW and presumably very mild steel for bending into exhaust
pipes but has stood up well My minis dont have mast straps either but I would put one on if doing it again Whats a pierced lug style mast strap?
My minis cost around NZ$320 each to build [the first one anyway I didnt cost the second ] Probably under 200 BP? Thats with second hand w/s masts and sails New wheels and tyres
If I had a choice I would go with the stainless if I didnt have the supply problem-- slightly stronger,no painting, less corrosion and I like the look
You will enjoy the mini they are fun

Hiko. Most of the exhaust pipe here is 1.5mm which I assumed would be a bit thin for a person of my current build - ahem. Maybe not such a problem for the missus, as it is meant to be her little yacht...i guess she might get to occasionally use it as well 'Pierced lugs' are those lovely ornate bits for taking the tubing on steel framed bicycles Might as well have a bit of fun with it. The s/s tube though heavier appeals to me for the reasons you've stated, but finding the other bits in stainless is tricky. This stuff is for handrails in public buildings!

Now that is the spirit. You are in front when you save those quids and the self satisfaction of having built your own is wonderful and deserving of Pride..

Nope! Paul not going to Bust a Boiler just stating the Bleeding obvious with passion

I think 1.5 mm would be pushing it too far Most exhaust tube here is 1.6mm but
the local exhaust shop also had 2mm in the larger sizes 52x2 [spine ] and 57x2

Always on the scrounge for bits, though seen as I'm not competing we'll be in the 'other car', the bit of core tube might look suspicious poking out the back of the old MX5 like a mortar The French police would love me Though there is one York member registered already, so I'm sure I could blag a bit of space in his trailer

Bizarrely the only bit of the LLF that is causing trouble is.... the 35mm x 35mm!! I thought, never mind 1.5" x 1.5" - and nothing. Sizes seem to go 20,22,25,30, 40, 50. So it'll be 40x40 and a bit of shimming.

Cheers Col

Gees! Col,
Strap it along the side, Rocket Launchers are perfectly normal.. Frog Police/gendarmes would only think you were a Plumber[}:)] .

Scrounger, Eh? Sounds like you'd make an OK Aussie We're always on the scrounge.

the 35x35 is really common, I have a workbench built into my shipping crate that has 35x35 legs, i'll probably take a spare or 2 in case I lose one in the sand
love to drive an MX5

You could probably pack a few miniyacht wheels in your shipping crate as ballast for the home leg [}:)]

but what if the fallshaws turn out to be really amazing compared to the Euro wheels? then i would have to get a round the clock security guard to keep an eye on them
