Bit of a newbie question, but how much mast is deemed reasonable to have inside the mast step?I currently have 17cm but I have put the top section of another mast into the bottom of the one I'm using to strengthen it.

That is short If you cant make it more say another 10CM Then I would suggest you make the bottom 35CM or so of your mast very stiff
Perhaps some steel tube inside the inner stiffener Make sure it is a snug fit or set it in silicone or similar

I do have an old 2 piece mast which I can chop up so should be able to get 2 or 3 sections inside the bottom 40-50cm of mast, would that work?

That could work You will just have to try it Try and stagger the lengths to avoid concentrated loads at the ends
The biggest concentration will be at the top of the step Thats where it needs to be stiffest and tapered out from there Good luck with it

Something that has not been mentioned is the tapering of at least the first section to be fitted into the mast and a slight Bell mouthing or ground outward tapering of the top of the step. This alleviate any sharp stress applied to the mast at that point, sharp edges will alow the top of any first insert to burst through and break the mast at that point as with the step.
How is the sailing doing for all you guys out there. I haven't sailed Occum's Razor in over 12 months. Tides, Wind and rain just have not been conducive among other things.
From what I can gather this last 12mths have been the wettest on record, All I can tell you is that every time I empty the rain gauge there is anything from 25 to 50mm a week for the last 3 months.
Ron
PS; I am thinking of taking up sailing, at least I'd be able to get out there.

The name of this thread seemed perfect. Is anyone using homemade masts on there class 5 yachts? If so, what type of a build are you using? Also, is the pacific magic mast a good build?

Have a look at page 4 of my photos. There is a plan for a mast there.
