Good morning. I'm designing/building a land yacht. A lugger rather than speedster. I had intended rigging it as a dinghy, shrouds and forestay. After much time on this page I'm contemplating going unstayed instead. The mast is from an Enterprise dinghy cut down to 5.1m. The luff of sail is 4.5m and the foot is 2.7m after cutting with leech around 4.3m to give end rise of the boom to allow good head clearance. My question is whether this would be better stayed, or whether having it unstayed is viable. Thanks, Rick. p.s. if unstayed is a possibility, what's a good step length. I've got around 500mm clear mast beneath the boom.

you might need to start posting pics at least. I suspect that you could end with a snapper. if you have a jib you will have jib tension issues

Yes thanks, landyacht. I've opted to keep rigging for that very reason. Tried posting pics, but unsure how to succeed at it.

If you have a jib in the sail setup you will need to have side stays to counteract the pull the jib has on the mast / rig.
