I can not find 6061 t-8 aluminum tube ANYWHERE to build a mast has anyone built one from 6061 t-6 and has it held up. 6061 T-6 is readily available here. The only aluminum in T-8 hardness is 6063 t-8 , but from what if have read it only half as strong as 6061 aluminum.

My class 5 Yorker design mast is built from scaffold tube for the lower section and T6 tubes for the top sections
Common design used here in New Zealand and originated in England Reliable design but not light

The scaffold tube we use is T6 so go for it. 48.4 od x 4.5 wall thickness. The top sections we use Drawn Tube which is 6063T8. Comes in a multitude of sizes that all sleeve neatly inside each other , 1.42mm wall thickness. Dont forget the stiffener in the bottom section, 38od x 3mm , mine is 2.5m long. I also have a stiffener in the stiffener, that is 1.5m. You gotta have a stiff mast if you want to sail high.

I was given the frame from a decommissioned hang glider.

I was looking a the leading edge tube, which has a fibreglass tip. How doe this tube work as a mast? It seems to have very thin wall, but I do not know the alloy or temper.

Cheers

A photo of the handgilder tube would help you get advice here.. Has it got any specs stamped on it? Is It aluminium or fibreglass?

Hi Clem.

Nothing stamped on it.

I am amidst a shed clean up, so I will dig it out for a measure and photo. There are quite a few section sizes, Also an aerofoil profile I am desperate to do something with.

I have to say I have been neglecting the Mini for quite some time but moving the bits and pieces around has inspired me to finish some builds and get back into it, I have found 4 frames in various stages of completion, (one of them painted!)

Starting a new build with the ali is something I have wanted to do, but I'll need to make some space and finish some stuff first!

Last trip in Ruff-Azz busted the sail, and the trip before bent the steering arm!

Also we use 6061 ali quite a lot at work, (My personal favourite ali alloy!). From memory getting anything more than T6 was a massive problem. Even specifying T6 we were often informed that they will "try" but the best they, (Ali extrusion suppliers) would guarantee was T5.

Cheers,
Glenn

I found a great source for 6061-t8 aluminum in telescoping sizes for anyone here in the states. Great prices and FREE SHIPPING cant beat that. the only draw back was they only have as long as 6 foot lenghts.www.dxengineering.com/search/department/rigid-tubing/part-type/aluminum-tubing/product-line/dx-engineering-aluminum-tubing?autoview=SKU&N=department%3arigid-tubing%2bpart-type%3aaluminum-tubing&sortby=Default&sortorder=Ascending
