posted over in sail making as well, but thought i had better post here too.

1. where would be the best place to buy masts for the mini here in canada, or usa.
and what would be the recommended type of mast- nice and robust- handle lots of abuse- doesnt need to be the lightest or fastest
2. sail plans or patterns for the mini?? anybody have some- or an idea where i can get hold of some
thanks all

Should give you some ideas for masts. Sorting out an aluminium one can be a nightmare trying to find the stock in the first place. Sabydent should be along at some point and help you with Canadian suppliers but I've found most things windsurfing on EBay in the UK.

Hi Fujimo
Masts for minis I have used old windsurfer masts you need to put a stiffener in the bottom for a metre or so using another section of windsurf mast or plane a taper on some timber to fit You also need to figure out what length you can comfortably transport I have made mine three piece by fitting a hardwood joiner into the lower section again they need to be tapered and glued to the lower part

Sails Again the used windsurf sails are an economical choice they usually need to be flattened by recutting if you want some speed but several people have used them just as they are successfully Plenty of info on this site to do both these things

Aluminium tube as has been said can be a bit of a minefield of sizes availability etc
For a knockabout mini its hard to go past used windsurf gear if you can find it

thanks guys.
i would like to ultimately build a few LY for the fdamily and extended family. we have an awsome beach here 20 odd km long 400m wide with varying surface conditions. so maybe a slightly fuller sail- keep the top speeds down a bit, allow for easy tacking if needed, and to accommodate all conditions. if there was somebody out there that could draw up a sail, that would really be awesome- and complete the package-so to speak-!!
all ideas appreciated
thanks

Hi Wayne, all I have ever used is a 2 piece, 30% carbon fibre, wind surfer mast, that I got in a sale for about 1/4 price close on 5 years ago. I have capsised numerous times and the only thing done to it was a smear of talcum powder/fibre glass resin mix, all over it to make it smoother(when the mast wears down from use, talc is released and allows the sail to rotate better)

Fujimo:

I got some used windsurfing masts in Calgary by searching used windsurfing equipment on Google. Out on the west coast, there is likely a lot of equipment available for a reasonable cost. One guy gave me five sails, two masts and a bunch of other stuff for free. He switched from windsurfing to kite boarding an was getting rid of his windsurfing stuff. Look at kijiji and check out some of the shops.

The plan is still to make custom sails, but I have to get my sailmaker out sailing so we can get the right design. When I do I will post the results.
