has anyone used a trailer kit to build a land sailer? Here in the states a trailer kit is about$300 there would be enough steel to build a yacht and the spindle- hub is good for highway speeds. Would this be too heavy??

The Chileans built a ripper 3 seater from the trailer they use to haul all thier gear up into the mountains.
relly its an obvious thing to do to maximize the fun. you will need a big sail or lots of mounts for your other yachts mast.

we once hooked a class 5 to the back of a quadbike for filming and it could push the quad quite easily.
The trailer sailor idea is in the back of the mind for a final race at a Pacrim.

My Father and I built our first landyacht with car axles, hubs and wheels (from a Datsun 120Y front end). It works well enough to be scary at times Not sure if the other steel in the kit will be any good for a landyacht frame/chassis though. The landyacht I've described is in the landyacht register if you would like to check it out and theres also a thread around the forum describing it I think.

For $300 I think you could get more appropriate materials for a landyacht. What size/type do you want? What resources do you have at your disposal?

I have read that some boat builders use tarps for a sail. Is this possible??

Talking to a sailmaker the other day he mentioned that many sails for smaller Asian fishing boats are made from tarps......

sure can use polytarp, but I have found the that the polyethylene from bulky bags is better. There are threads where Ive used the stuff, you could just scale up or down as required

Buonos Dias juan enrique, Glad to hear from you , chatted to Marcelo the sailmaker just recently, he says he is making all sorts of nice sails.
just seeing photos of that lake makes me want to pack my yacht and a bag and get on a plane
