There's a write up in todays paper about how ALDI and COSTCO won't come to WA because of the restricted shopping hours in the metro area. (Thursday the only night and no Sundays, except for tourist precincts during the school holidays)

If you have not heard of ALDI, you will more than likely know about them soon. Word is they are planning on 700 stores Australia wide. We buy about 75% of our weekly groceries from their store in here in Bundaberg.

From cheddar cheese to computers, they have consistantly good quality products at very competitive prices with a high Australian content. No plastic bags.

So , because we dont have ridiculously long trading hours, super huge overseas stores wont come here and sell us lots of useless crap that we didnt actually need, whilst making our family lives hell due to mum being out working a second job on a checkout . and our course forcing the smaller grociery/ hardware chains to sell up as they cant compete.
I thought we already had too many of those, now you tell me there are bigger oes waiting to gobble them up

Must admit , it would be nice to just buy a sail bag.
usually by the time Ive made a sail, a turban , and cut the battens to length, I just want to knack off for the night, but know I need to get out the sheet of cafe awning that I cut my sailbags from and whip up one more free sailbag

Yes I am a terrble father, I have this really bad habit of being home just before the kids get in from school. Gives me a chance to sharpen the tools ready for the kids to play with
or get an assistant to help with glassing or polishing or holding up a sail on the sewing table. some days they earn big money if Im desperate

Dave,

Thanks for the suggestion. I saw Ben's fully packed (IIRC, 4 sails plus the mast) and it was well within the weight limit for the plane. At $15 a pop, you can't go wrong.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the heads up, the bags are great value for money, & quite a few were purchased in Victoria.

The best thing about the bags were the $$, $97.00 to be saved over the Blokart product go figure

Absolutly their Landy if we dont support our dealers there is no point in them being dealers, but looking at the Aldi product it is an inferior bag compared to the overpriced Blokart bag IMHO.
Maybe we should get someone to road test all products and give us a review on value for money.

It's awfully hard to beat doing your own for value for money (or proving that you can design a better mousetrap)

Why bother when the average Hourly rate is $50.00 per hour , I have better things to do , playing with landyachts?A sail bag isnt really a big problem , you only put a sail in it, it was only a cheap solution

Don't for *&^%$ sake cross over to here then, you won't get $50 an hour, more like $18, and a 10 minute job to make a sail bag costs you $1.80 in time!

Just to clarify the maths on this

$18 / hr = $0.3 per min (18/60)
then a 10min job would cost $3.00
then add the material (try finding a suitable zipper at this length for less than $10.00) so without any other material this thing has already cost you $13.00.

I agree whole hartedly with not supporting the purchase of items made in China (or in my business it is not only China but also India and Asia).

It's really hard to be the only one in the world not buying cheap imported goods and supporting local industry (you can try it but you will go broke trying). We often try to purchase locally made goods but usually find that they are simply imported goods rebadged or disributed by a local supplier.

The only logical answer here is to learn Chinese so that when all our jobs end up there we will at least be able to make our way from home to work.

My wife made me a sail bag for the blokart event in Yeppoon earlier this year. $80 for materials (I will admit, we had a better zip than on the Aldi one) and 2-3 hours with a sewing machine. Although the zip held out, the bag itself developed a tear, hence my need for a new one.

I'm with Dave on this one. If you can buy a sail bag, it is pretty hard to make one for less.

OK I am so sorry (not) that my maths is so bad to subsidize the chinese industry, I have made probably several hundred sailbags for all sorts of things, and the only ones EVER that had zips were for keelboat racing bags where they lay on the foredeck for quick sailchange, so extract the zip from your costings which I use.

and I see they have digital calipers for $20. Not entirely sure how accurate they would be but certainly can't complain about the price..
