On the way back from Gillies we took the time to drive in to the beach at eucla. only 4km of the bitumen. only the last 50m were 4wd. The beach was starting to fill with weed for the winter but was plenty wide and hard enough to sail on
The beach is a bit resticted in terms of lenght to sail on. ONLY 150kms to the west and about 20 km to the east
we are doing more research on summer winds and beach conditions so that a little expidition can be organized. Its only 980kms drive from Kalgoorlie to the beach.

We did not take any photos with us down on the beach when we went to look. However the beach was about the same width as Esperances Cape Le Grande, where we used to sail regularly. Even with the start of the build up of winter seaweed you could have still sailed on the day we were the there.

No doubt Paul will respond with exactly how many meters wide, I did not notice that!

I do recall the comment at the time that it would have to be a boys trip. I hope shes not getting any ideas of running it for me.
A club 88 could do it. But fit some hand steering in case you need to shove over the odd dune.
From the beach I saw and the wind and tide data I think that Cape Le Grande beach would be the best comparison. Basically a massive broad reach with the occasional more downwind leg as the beach scallops a bit. the 2 Date windows i posted give a morning low tide at 7.00 am but the high is at 9.00 pm. ie 1 tide. Our experience at this time of year is that the chances of light winds in
January are almost nil ,so that would be my choice. I will be inclined to take a class 5 if the beach is really wide on the day. I will be fitting a cam cleat to the sheeting so I can have a sleep and still sail.
I plan to also take a mini in case the beach is narrower or there is a softer bit that needs negotiating.
We will need a couple of people willing to take a turn driving the support 4WD(s) and try to make it possible that everybody gets a go.
I suspect we could do the beach in 2 days of sailing to the west.

CISCO? recently showed some photos of some6x8 2ply ribbed fatties that would fit the mini. I might try to get some and see if they fit.
this beach is just soooooooo tempting, and it was there all along.

Sorry Paul, they are 5" wide x 6" dia tyres that will fit a blokart rim or same spec rim as fitted to ride on mower trailer.

They are heavier and not well balanced and I didn't get a good result on soft surface.

Main benefit is tougher compound, laid on thicker which makes them more durable for bitumen.

Somebody from Newcastle posted a video with a blokart on fatties that can be bought from a kite buggy shop.

Look on the blokart section of this forum in the thread "Best Tyres for Softer Sand". All good stuff there. Gizmo posted photo of an 8" tyre on what looks like a ride on front wheel.

Mower shops usually have a good range of tyres, quite often at cheaper prices than tyre retailers. Given a recent event at your end, you might be a bit nervous about going into a mower shop. How is the old nose picker, getting better quick I hope. Life's a real bitch without one of those.

Had a look at Eucla on Google Earth. Looks like it would be the longest beach in Aus. You wouldn't happen to have a grid reference for those two pubs would ya?? Cheers Cisco.

G'day evereyone,

Lindsay & I used the kite buggy tyres on a "baby" faze5. You can go anywhere, but they are relatively heavy and more so for a little yacht. 600x6 aero tyres would be much faster and more than enough for a blokart / mini yacht to go on soft stuff (and they are much tougher). Probably woudn't need to go to 800x6. You'd want a bigger tyre on front of blokart as well.

Lindsay had 600x6 on at gillies.

mate I like on a different lpanet. the local mower shop orders in the mower when you pick it in a catalogue. The hardware shop has a complete range of overpricedcrap that is too poor quality to use. the tyre retailer wants $50 for a wheelbarrow tyre, with the wrong tread, and 6 ply,and destroys your rim putting it on. These are a few of the wonderful reasons I started the build a yacht thread , to help every new builder save some time and experiments.
The 2 pubs are EUCLA HOTEL at the eastend. lovely caravan Park, 4kms from the start point and at the other end is MADURA PASS roadhouse. it is 40kms by track from Red Rocks Point. this would be the exit point.you would have to backtrack to red rocks from the end of the beach as there is a massive dune field at that end backing up to 300ft cliffs.
at some point we would have to stop and fish as this plce is reckoned as the best beach fishinf spot in Aus. from the cliffs at BORDER vILLAGE Yyou could see some awsome holes in the surf, and even large fish/sharks a swimming .

Hi landyacht,

Sounds like an adventure! As someone who's sailed over 200 km in a day, I can say with certainty that you really need to have a backup plan in case something breaks. It's all very well blasting into the wide blue yonder, but when things go wrong you need to know that you can safely get help. And things WILL go wrong, even with gear that's relatively new and unmodified.

Remember those two kitesurfers who tried a big downwinder a couple of months ago and triggered a full scale search when they didn't get to their destination?

I'm sure you've got that aspect covered, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

Sounds like fun anyway

you'll have to start seriuosly learning to sail downwind TP1. but yes it would be feasible. i would be inclined to leave out the passengers. A simple rule is if you take it , YOU push it. Is a mini sounding any better?

I put my thinking brain on and had a go at fitting a 6.5 tyre to a 4.00 rim. It looked happy so I planed the knobs off and buffed to finish.
I'll have togo find a sand track to trial them on now
nearly 50% wider but still round an only %10 lighter after planing

I would love to come on this trip to Eucla but it's just too far for us. Maybe at a later time next year. On a point of interest about back-up. It would be very good if the back-up vehicles carried an extra battery each. The two batteries can be joined together (24V) and used to weld any broken (steel) L/Y. Take a set of good (heavy) jumper leads as they make excellent welding leads. Use 2.5mm welding rods (Satincraft are excelent) and carry a welding helmet or shield. The batteries will work as a DC welder and will do a perfect weld. To ajust the amps, clamp a strip of 25mm x 1.5mm x 500mm stainless steel to a battery terminal and move the welding lead along the stainless steel strip to get the amps required. Try this at home first, you will be quite surprised at how great this works.

plan is to go sailing. if it breaks then you pack it up and follow the other sailors down the beach.
I saw the battery welding thing being done once. it was all going well till the rod stuck. whilst wiggling the handpiece free the leads to the batteries moved, and the spark ignited the gas build up in one of the cells. BANG.
no battery, plastic shrapnel and hot acid. Also 1 of the vehicles now had no battery. fortunately we were in his backyard when he was giving the demo.
the new battery cost more than a welder!

I reckon the novelty will wear off in about the 3rd pushing session I have managed to get a driver for 1 vehicle tho. A retired and bored father in law.
