You guys might not consider this a premium sailing spot, but around where I live, it's about the best you could ask for. A friend of mine told us about this dry lake bed in the desert, so I figured we should check it out. Hard clay surface, with obstacles here and there to keep it interesting. It's loads of fun to run through one of those bushes at about 30mph!
The Mini's ran really good there on that nice smooth surface.

I thought you guys might get a kick out of my "alternative" shelter.

Looks rather like Mirage?

It's a Teepee, or Tipi. 3-pole Lakota Sioux pattern to be exact. the inside is 16 feet from door to back and my larger one is 19 feet from door to back, so it can fit the whole family with room to spare for beds, fire, etc. Very different from a Wigwam used by eastern US natives.

Not Mirage. It's a place in south-central Wyoming, North East of where I live. Most people don't even know it's there. (Including me, up until last month.) I'll try to get a map or Google earth placement, so you can get a better idea of where I'm talking about. My buddy nick-named it WAHU... as in WAAAAHOOO! or what you say when your land sailor quickly accelerates to top speed.

It’s sage. Hammered by the wind. No cows because there’s nothing around for them to eat, or water either. Good thing too; I’d hate to be sailing along and have a cow step out in front of me. Saw a lot of pronghorn antelope though. They don’t think much of running 30 miles for water. Real curious critters too. I had one move to within 60 yards of me while walking around in the morning. He was trying to figure out what I was all about.

A big, class-5 rig would be frustrating, but the Mini’s are perfect.

Funny story;
For the smaller bushes, if you run your front wheel just alongside the bush then the rear axle will clear it with no problem. This works great because you can sail in straighter lines and build more speed. I got used to this in the mini, then I took my friends buggy out for a spin.
He builds an “A” frame buggy with a hammock type seat slung between the main side rails toward the front. What I didn’t realize is; when seated with this arrangement, my hind-parts are located below the frame and therefore exposed as the lowest clearance part of the whole vehicle besides the wheels touching the ground.
I sheeted in hard and started hooting along, came up on a bush, cleared the bush with the front wheel and then received a very uncomfortable swat on the backside! The bush blew apart and filled my shorts with thorny sticks.

Yet another lesson learned the hard way.

"Ben Hur" style. I like it! Probably wouldn't live to enjoy it very long, but it sounds like fun.

Do you guys watch Top Gear TV show from Britain?
One of them welded on wheel-hub knives (or whatever you call them) in order to gain the advantage in a race. If I remember right, the entire wheel tore off and went rolling across the pasture.

50m steel cable between 2 4wds, have the vehicles about 20m apart, and clear some long runs across the lake, widen some corridors, join up some clearings, and in no time you'll have a great spot, without completely wrecking the lake and getting any official attention
