Well then,

Welcome to the forum, stalker or not

What kind of build were you looking to take on? Do you have any experience in building or sailing landyachts?

Let us seabreezers know what you want and need, and we'll be there with answers and lies

Sounds like you'n me is gunna come to Logger Heads soon, as I AM Gunna Hunt You Down.
Welcome to the Forum, you will find we can all Lie,Cheat and Misdirect you as well as any other forum.

If as you say you have been Stalking us for awhile then you have Chosen Well in your attempts to Glean build information and Keep in mind there is no such thing as "Silly Questions" there is only General Ignorance of the Facts which can be quickly remedied.
You should also keep in mind you have chosen a Very Addictive Pass time, you only have to Read Paul/Landyachts Threads as he has now become a menace to his family and is Training His Daughters in the same misdemeanors.
Go For It,

Welcome gg. It's all in the name of land sailing fun here, so I that is what you are looking for you have reached home.

Living at Ningi puts you quite close to a very good land sailing beach.
You may have seen a few land yachts there already. Red Beach on the south end of Bribie Island is ideal for southerly winds and if there is more east in the breeze, go over to Woorim.

But first you have to build a yacht. Most popular recommendation from all here is the Lake Lefroy Mini Yacht plans for which are downloadable free from this site.

Also recommended is sticking to the plan for your first build. It can take a custom made or recut sail or some standard windsurfer rigs work well too.

The plans with illustrated building process are here. www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Land-Yacht-Sailing/Construction/Build-a-Landyacht-Lake-Lefroy-Mini-Yacht/ which is a sticky at the top of the construction page.

There are other illustrated builds there with some small variations.

Happy building and sailing.

P.S. Just one other unwritten rule around here. Post pics or it didn't happen.

Gidday Grumpy and family!

Welcome to the crew
looks to me like you need 5 lefroy mini's, 2 fitted with sideseats to carry the apprentice and the dog.

Building 5 in one go works as steel etc is cheaper by the length!

might need a decent size trailer- or enroll in Pauls trailer packing school

Kewl Thanks guy's, I have down loaded Pauls Mudmaps.. it's given me a good starting point... However it will be getting the Gnome tweaks... As I don't wish to competitivley race and get involved in any "SAGA" crap.. it will be a smidge longer,Capable to be a smidge wider one side (Interchangable) and have the ability to have a two up side by side IE: for the Apprentice, or the Handbrake (shhh don't repeat that RIOGHT)... or me mate the blind Cocker Spaniel.. I was entertaining the idea of having Coil over suspension[}:)] but my wife told me to stop being a dick trying to reinvent the wheel... as I do.. but I will be making it have a depth adjustable steering system so my mates who are normal height can have a crack as well.. this will be a round the mast kinda thing got it in my head just gota draw it up.. will use a substancial main centre bar with side rails to support a two up ride.. It will be pretty well all Stainless and TIG'd so sorry guys Noah's arc will not be required as the business makes shower commodes and stuff for the health dept and we have lots of 3mm wall stuff kicking round along with electronic benders and scallop cutters.. I haven't decided on the sail yet as it's doin my head in.. I'm leaning towards a 4.7 wind surfer sail but just not sure about all this wind stuff... apperantly I'm an expert on wind in any situation according to the handbrake.. have no idea what she means... I have the front wheel sitting on the kitchen table, so it has begun lol.. I also have an idea kicking about in my noggin for brakes... but thats not real important.... The towbar will be a work of art..[}:)] the whole unit will have to dismantled so can be put ontop off the teardrop hybrid... ohh and just by the way... we are a Richmond/Fallshaw agent.. and also there is a new player on the scene.. based on the gold coast, one of their exec's was a high flyer in another Castor and Industrial company... and their stuff so far is the shizzle... and remarkably cheaper then it's competition..

Sounds like a plan........

stick to the original chassis plan for length and width, then all you need for the passenger seat/ dog carrier is a longer axle on one side like chook did with his.

dont bother with anything more than the standard lefroy mini type brake- any more is a waste- and brakes on a mini are just cosmetic anyway!

brakes on the front wheel just lock up and skid, if you really insist on brakes- simple levers pushing on the rear tyres are more effective, but the best way of stopping is to drop the rope and turn into the wind (works better than any brake.)

Brakes really aren't for me.. just a GEOOZUS handle for the others.. I get what you mean and I understand where your going .. I have a rotary wing ticket so I get it , but I need to make it annoying family/friend Proof ...

My one piece of advice would be to build a couple, that way you don't have to wait for the mate or family member to hand it back for "your go" and it's more fun sailing with friends and boosting or commiserating afterwards(maybe with a drink) or at work where your workmates start to wonder if there may be more to weekends than drinking while watching footy.

the core tube we use is obtained as scrap, so it has a minimal value.
interesting yacht. a 1990's pacific magic chassis, with a mid 80's mark white (whitehot racing designs) sail
the sails were rather good in their day, this was one of his first vertical cut efforts.
the rig shown would need to proprly set up. if the sail is still in good nick , with decent battens and the chassis is true, it could be tuned to race quite well. the sails were fairly light cloth though,4oz, these days it usually 5-5.5oz

as far as sails go- just do what we all do,

hit your local council recycling depots and get whatever you can, or scrounge from local windsurfers, or buy through the for sale section in this forum.

no need to chuck big lumps of cash around- unless you really want to!

Just Gi'me the Dough! I could build a Helluva Good Land Yacht for $4Grand.
Yes, grumpygnome the Boom seems abnormally High to me as well. The Razor with a 5mtr mast and the Speed Sail just gives me Head clearance. Seems to me that with a boom that and a large sail would decrease the machines stability greatly. I think the Seller is having a lend of the Naive..

Rest assured my friend... the minister of WAR & FINANCE is riding the horse on this one.. and the reins are tighter than Fish's ... I am thinking just a windsurfin sail this time, with the pulleys on the back edge..

Way to go. Went down to Elliott Heads the other day and with a 25 knot easterly blowin' there were four kite guys and a couple of wind surf guys having a fat old time.

Got chatting with a w/s guy and asked him if he Seabreezed, which he does but only for weather, then asked him if he had any old sails that he would like to see recycled.

He gave me a 9.5 metre mono film with battens and cams and a Gaastra 5.5 metre dacron bare sail.

Excellent return for being friendly and having a chat.

the boom is so high because the mast is probbly a Faze5/given mast(post1986 class5 mast specs) and the sail was made around mid 1985(original specs-shorter mast) these sails had a webbing top and dont slide past the top of the mast.
just a bit of mismstched gear.
the sail could be quickly altered or the mast shortened. i would change the head of the sail, leaving the mast available for a newer sail.
the sail you see in the photo is probably the same profile as a club 88, but Mark made a taller sail in late 1985, once the new mast regs kicked in

I know the finance feeling very well!

A standard windsurfing sail and boom (with pulleys hung on the back) will be best to start with anyway- it gives you more low down "grunt" to start rolling, but less top end speed, ideal for grass or high drag surfaces.
Later on you can think about modified windsurfing sails- less low down grunt but lots more top speed, better for low drag surfaces (and greater yippee factor)
You might need to lengthen a standard mast a bit- various ways to do this- but easiest is to jam a vacuum cleaner pipe on top.
Also with the mast- you need to reinforce the base of the mast to stop it snapping, a close fitting piece of timber, aluminium or part of a broken mast (around 1 to 1 1/2 metres long) can all do the job.

All from salvage yards, council recycling depots or scrap heaps.

As a guide- for ages, I paid no more than $10 for a sail or mast at my local council recycling depot, its only recently gone up to $15 a piece.
Pulleys and wheels are the biggest expense .Almost all our pulleys are recycled from excercise machines dumped at roadside council collections. not the finest quality, but they work.....most of the time.....(jammed rope adds to the excitement)
When visiting my depot, I work on the principal of buying every sail and mast I can find, even if damaged, as they can usually be used for recutting or supplying patches and battens for other sails, and if a standard boom looks good I will buy it too.
Any of this that I dont need for myself and my son is spread between Paul, Chook and his brood of school students and another school here in Perth.

Every now and then I put a notice in the W.A. windsurfing section of this forum- scrounging for unwanted windsurfing sails, masts and booms for the schools- I make a point that everything gained in this way goes to the schools.

Sometimes I can go months without finding anything- but at other times I almost need another verandah for the amount I collect.

Stephen.
