I'm only using my cycle helmet at the moment and I want to upgrade as mine doesn't have much protection at the back of the head or around the ears.

I like the style of the blue one pictured on the Seagull XL brochure on Pheonix's web site: http://www.phoenixlandsailing.com/Seagull_XL.pdf

Are they or something similar available in Aus and how much? What is everyone else using?

How about a hang gliding helmet. Do you think some of these would look a bit over the top

Blokart helmet is a garden variety bicycle helmet available almost anywhere in a variety of colours, even camo.

having destroyed 2 MCycle helmet over the years I would wear nothing else. PROMOGIRL was run over by a class 5 in 1987 by one of the first club88 s and escaped with only a tyre burn on her helmet. we threw away the helmet afterwards and bought exactly the same model. We currently use a hemet by THH which has a very retro look ,having a very high back and a removable neck pad. very light and comfy, not too hot on the salt lake.
The arguement over helmets raged for years in the 80's and the minimum ALSA standard became bike helmets.. Just dont get hit in one
In VINDICATOR nothing less than good quality full face, neccesary for Dental identification.

Hey what do the experts think of these helmets? There are white ones on Ebay for under $50 or black are under $80 and they are legal to use on motorcycles in Aus. I thought the higher back might stop if from hitting my cusion like a normal motorcycle helmet does, yet give better protection than a cycle helmet.

Also means I don't need to get a new helmet when I get my Harley (I wish )

these look the same as the ones PROMOGIRL and I wear. they are lighter and comfier than other open face . the ones we have have an unzippable padded piece at the rear and a visor ,which this one doesnt seem to have the rivets to fit.
Brand we use is THH . around $100 australian. be wary of chinese imitations, unless you have a cheap chinese head to go with it. In Argentina, they used almost anything they could find. Some of the French stuff was definitely not suitable for hitting anything with

Yeah, It doesn't say where they're made but it does say they're certified to be AS1698 compliant and also states LICENSED ROAD WORTHY TESTED NUMBER 10804 MC. For the price I think I'll check one out.

Having ridden powerfull motorcycles before helmets became compulsory (wore one most of the time anyway) and come off a few times, I can understand the necessity of protecting the box that houses that part of our being that says "Go land yachting and I will give you huge sensations of pleasure."

According to an article published in "Two Wheels" magazine at the time, debating the pros and cons of "skid lids", "brain boxes" etc, the maximum speed to stop impact the human brain can withstand is 24 kmh.

You pays your money and you takes your chances.

On a landyachtspeedo that woud be equivalent to " sheet rope completely out"
when I started sailing again a few years ago I rather enjoyed showing off in a yacht called 'WEE WEE WEE' in the local car park. we were gettig 40kph some days. one day , no helmet ,no seatbelt, big gust and I shot out of the car park onto a big gravel patch, spun , pitchpoled and as I slid along the sail and mast like superman I bonked head with the tip of the mast. Lesson learnt. all blood stains were due to gravel rash THROUGH the sailand an egg of a head bruise.
the same gust was the one where Test Pilot caved in a car door .
Ive Sailed with helmet and belt ever since ( well almost)

Landyacht, I've found those THH helmets in Adelaide, do you use the plastic of the fibreglass model? Plastic were about $85 and he'd sell me the fibreglass one for $100, but that was significantly reduced.
