When sailing solo my yacht feels as if it goes pretty well but when I sail with others there are some yachts that seem much better up wind, one tack to my three! This may be the difference between recut windsurf sails and frog sails in which case I'll just have to put up with but if there are other aspects of set up or geometry I will try the changes. So are there things that I should try to improve up wind performance?

Two things to check first come to mind:
1) Can you sheet the boom onto the center-line of your boat/hull?
2) When you're sheeted in all the way, is the top of the sail twisting off?

Cheers,

stiffer mast is the way to go if you want better upwind performance.
