I see from the photos that hills has picked up a bad habit early. when i designed your yacht the rear axles came out to make it EASY to lift onto a trailer or roofrack. it also means that you clean out the Ally/steel contact so rust doesnt start. Also 2 yachts can rack side by side. SHAME,SHAME,SHAME.
every yacht Ive seen that didnt do this discovered that when they pranged they couldnt get the axle out . end of chassis!
here endeth the lesson

Are the loads on a landyacht high enough to notice bumpsteer from a steering kingpin that's offset from the centreline of a wheel?

Haha, thanks Paul. Don't worry, my land yacht will be attended to very well. I'm happy to pull it apart at home and perform that maintenance, but I got the trailer so I wouldn't have to do so at the beach. (less set up and pull down time = more sailing time ) Plus I was worried if I put them on and off at the beach I might get sand in the axle grease.

Thanks for the tip though, point taken!

EDIT: BTW you wait till you see how I've set up the trailer, its a masterpiece (if I do say so myself ). I have used a swiveling front cradle so you can put the front on from the side and then lift the back and swing it around onto the 2 back cradles. My intention was to make it so I could load it, fully assembled, by myself.

I'll post a pic tomorrow as even I can't understand what I've just written

I have just been speaking to one of the landyaching gurus here in SA. He read this question and was telling me that the kingpin on the c-bracket steering design is set so that there is virually no bump steer. Originally they were vertical and thus you couldn't take your left foot off the pedal or you'd go around in circles and it was worse if you hit a pothole etc.

I must admit he was getting a bit too technical for a newbie like me but I hope I've passed it on correctly and it answers your question.

Arrrr, that makes sense. From the pictures it looked vertical so I thought you'd have buckets of bumpsteer*, but I guess if the kingpin is angled a bit then you wouldn't have that problem.

Tricky business, steering design!

*More correct to call this effect loadsteer, but no-one would know what I was on about.

Yeah, apparently an engineer had to work it out for them. I have posted another photo that shows the angle of the kingpin.

Lovely photo, shows it clearly

Draw a line down through the kingpin and it should touch the contact patch (left/right). If the line is in front of the contact patch then you get auto-correction, if it's too close to the contact patch (fore/aft) then the steering will be really twitchy.

Lots you can play with

I must admit when I built it I just blindly followed the angles in the plan, but what you said does make perfect sense now you mention it
