I was just wondering how starts are performed? is everyone just lined up? if so how is it decided who gets the upwind position?

Hey mate, I'm only new to the sport and haven't finish building mine yet, so hopefully someone will answer this for both of us. The racing instuctions I have been given by the Adelaide Land Yacht Club only state that no yacht is to be in motion or may cross the start line before the start of the race and that grid positions are given out at the pilots meeting before the race, but it doen't state how they are allocated.

Theres a few different starting systems used around the world. for local club racing we usually line up and take turns at getting the windward position. At lefroy we sometimes leave the yachts in the same posi and swap yachts. But you can tell the pilots whe want to win ,win, win because they will hang back and try to roll early. In the bigger yachts its not safe to have a flying start. BLOKART sailing is done with a flying start, but they mount sensors on the yachts and have electronic timing to do all the work.
At an international level, the system used is known as the MOREL GRID. a mathematically designed system which allows large fleets of up to 60(?) yachts to start on a narrow beach. Look it up by googling FISLY. Its actually a good system despite the way people stuff it up.
cheers Paul
