How does everyone transport their landyachts?

I'm trying to choose between buying and modifying an old dingy trailer thats on Ebay or building my own custom roof rack that will slide off the side of the roof to allow easier loading.

The roof rack will be the cheapest and come in handy for camping, but will take a while to weld up and the trailer means another rego and won't be much use for anything other than transporting the landyacht.

What've you all done?

salty landyachts on the roofrack is not always good. i have atrailer which does work all week, then gets racks on it for carrying yachts .
A PM is designed to be narrow with the axles out so you can fit 3 on a rack. take water along to clean it before racking. if the rack slides out sideways make it into a shade whilst sailing

Cheers Paul, yeah salt on the roof is an issue I didn't consider. Think that might sway me towards the trailer option. Plus it would be much easier to load too.

all my trailers have racks about o.5 m above the trailer for the yachts so as not to get in the way of all the other junk needed.

Hi Hills
my [insert generic American 4x4 brand here] hasn't suffered from salt water from sailboard portage, if that helps. Still got that 3rd rack for you any time.

Haha, Cheers Tonto. It must be due to the extremly high build quality and galv body of that Generic American 4x4 Brand

Thanks I've only just arrived back from a week in Vic. with the family. I'll contact you regarding picking it up.

Ahh , but we sail on pure salt, and the yachts drop chunks onto the roof

Yeah, good point. Tonto lent me his roof rack and I used it to pick up the landyacht from the 4x4 show. But it took 3 of us to get it up there and then when I got home all I could do is suspend it from the carport roof and drive the Jeep out from under it. So I am picking up the trailer I posted in the photos section this weekend. Hopefully that should make loading and unloading a lot easier!!
