I am planning a sail from Sydney to the Gold Coast and would like to have an overnight stop at Tuncurry. My boat draws 2.1Mts and it seems there is not much depth in the harbor. Does any one have any experience.

I haven't sailed into Forster-Tuncurry but have stayed there a lot and snorkeled the channel numerous times.

There are very limited spots to anchor but you might be able to get a berth alongside through the Fishermans Co-op. On the Forster side there is a small harbor which, although there are a few yachts berthed there, is depth limited.

It is plenty deep enough to get over the bar and in the channel although you might have to judge the tide for depth.

The bigger issue is the tidal flow. Wallis Lakes is a huge body of water and the flow is bloody fast on the full flood or ebb. The standing waves have high vertical faces. An easterly swell obviously makes it worse.

Having said that it isn't a difficult port in most conditions provided you go in on the start of the flood. Aim for a good few hours, about 4, after low tide.

Lucas "Cruising the NSW Coast" is a good guide.

Hi,
I have a coxswains licence for this bar. Do not attempt to cross the bar on a falling tide as the race runs at about 10 knots with resulting standing waves just inside the walls. Best on a rising tide near the top. There is considerable overflow on this bar and you could get in up to an hour late before the tide turns, just remember that the tide is DROPPING. Keep clear of the end of the walls by at least 100m as the rocks extend out a ways under water. One yacht has already been wrecked on the southern wall in the 1980's.

If the swell is 3m or above keep going north to the Camden Haven, Trial Bay or Coffs Harbour. Also with a large swell forget Port Macquarie.

Best to approach the entrance from just south of the line of the southern wall, before turning into the entrance. The actual bar is in line with the north wall some 3 to 400 meters out.

Once in, move across to the north wall at the western side of the swimming beach, there is a light on that point. Then staying close to that wall, I mean 50 feet max. [watch your depth sounder], proceed up to the Fishing Co-op.

You can anchor in the stream, but you must be there for the tide changes in case your rode wraps around your anchor and fouls it.

Or you can moor up to one of the wharves. I don't know what the situation re payment is at the moment but last I heard it was $25 per day, see the Fish co-op. Be warned, to moor to one of the wharfs you will need springers and a mooring board to allow you to lay alongside a pole. It's not like a marina. The small harbour on the southern side is not generally used by visiting yachts.

But all said and done, if you follow Lucas's direction you can't go wrong.

I'll look out for you if you come into the Camden Haven.

Thanks for the Info. I have looked at a YouTube Video of the Bar, looks intimidating albeit most likely worst conditions you could encounter.

I have purchased a boat in NSW and will be sailing it back to WA at my leisure. Guess I will need to get used to crossing Bars. (don't have that issue in WA).

I will certainly look into the cruising guide by Lucas.

My home port but my yacht doesn't live here!

All great advice above. Accurate too!!

You can surf 3' standing waves on the run out tide in the channel so you need a fair bit of grunt to push in through that. Top of tide best as said above or run in especially when flat seas.

At the moment the Tuncurry moorings and breakwall from the co op to the bridge is being refurbished,, nearly finished by the looks of it. Best to call the Wallis Lake Fishermans Coop, 02 6554 6402. They manage the moorings again now. Don't expect a hot shower , actually don't expect a shower at all!! There is toilets across the park

Anyway people do anchor in the middle of the Tuncurry channel, too narrow on the Forster side to do that. But like NSW said you've gotta watch your anchor on the change of the tide.

If you keep going north Crowdy Heads harbour used to be an option but not sure these days.

Thanks for the nice words rynot55.

Just so everybody knows, the reason why you have to watch your anchor during the tide change is that you will be anchoring less than 100m from the Forster/Tuncurry Bridge. No room for error or drift.

Crowdy Head wharf has been condemned, no mooring allowed. But by asking someone in the mooring posts you should get a place there.
The fish co-op went bust and only a couple of boats work out of Crowdy now. PS on that....NO SHOWERS ETC!

Still, if you come into the Camden Haven there is the free wharf [for 3 days] and all the facilaties close at hand. Don't forget to go to the museum.

Yes I will go around the top. I am in no hurry so I will probably spend some time in the Whitsundays and then some time in the Kimberly.
I will do this between April and October.
I think NSWSailor has convinced me that Camden Haven is the best place to stop over, should be there at the end of the month

Send me an email RiffRaff about a week before you get to the Camden Haven.

Overnight from Port Stephens to Camden Haven is an easy run.

Do you have a blogsite on Blogsails yet so we can follow your efforts?

P.S. We have six cruisers in port at the moment.

Just noticed an item on the news recently about the moorings on the Tuncurry side.

Be aware that while the piles are still in place there are no wharves to get ashore.

Seems they were damaged recently and are at present being renovated.

Thanks NSWsailor,
I am leaving Newcastle on 27 Dec and sailing a short sail to Port Stephens (get used to the new boat) From there I am doing an overnight sail to Camden Haven so I will bypassing Tuncurry.
Talking with Dunbogan Boatshed for a mooring for a day or two, looks like I am in luck.

Usual precautions for bar entry apply to Camden Haven bar. There is a 2 to 2.5hr over-run, so if you plan to be crossing the bar at the advertised High time it will still be trickling in 2 hrs later. I have learnt the hard way to ignore the leads.... there is essentially 2 bars (inner & outer) you will avoid the outer bar (& pretty much the inner bar too) by entering from the sth & duck into the entrance on the southern side. Naturally give Telegraph rock, off Perpindicular (?) Pt a wide berth, the swell(& entry) looks intimadating when rounding Telegraph Rock, but seems to peter off on approach & entry is quite easy. That's the gist of it, NSWsailor may provide details.
Not to worry if Dunbogan boatshed moorings are full, theres plenty of room to anchor, or tie to the free wharf if theres space, & if your there for NYE the RSL put on a very good fireworks show, they also give you a key for free showers (with a key deposit), cheers

Thanks BlueMoon,
Stayed at Camden Haven last night on a mooring. Was impressed with the moorings there, very pretty place. The depth was a little concerning at first as I draw 7.1 ft
Left Early this morning for Coffs.

Good on ya Riffraff. Can just see you from Bonny Hills....looks like your motoring nearly at Tacking Pt.
Think I may of seen you in the river yesterday too?...were you scoping out moorings from kayaks while anchored off the free wharf? I was the fella teaching my kids to row a dinghy near the moorings, cheers
