Boat is going really slowly under motor and there is a large amount of black smoke coming from the Bukh (fairly new). Could these two things be related and why?
Also, will we need to slip her to clean the barnacles.

Most common causes of black smoke are faulty injectors, a faulty injector pump, a bad air filter. Have you ever used diesel biocide in your old fuel tank
Incorrect timing Dirty or worn injectors Over-fuelling (ie not enough air to match the fuel) Incorrect valve clearance Incorrect air/fuel ratio Low cylinder compression (eg sticking piston rings or worn components) Dirty air cleaner Restricted induction system (eg system too small or kinked inlet piping) Other engine tune factors Poor quality fuel Excessive carbon build up in combustion and exhaust spaces Cool operating temperatures

clean that prop as well se how it goes

nice warm water where you are .........dive dive dive ........ with a scraper / scourer [on prop], clean prop and hull [with stiff brush] . then see how she goes ............

Black smoke could be due to unburnt diesel caused by too much throttle. I watch the my revs when applying throttle and if they don't go up as I give more throttle then I know I've passed the point where I'll be now wasting fuel. Things that cause this for me are when the boat can't get to the required speed due to the sea state, head wind or growth on the hull. In your case I would suggest cleaning the said barricades off before worrying about the black smoke. Good luck

If you have a folding prop just one or two barnacles will effect speed. Half a dozen will make it just about useless. Black smoke indicates the engine is working too hard. Probably a dirty bottom and a fouled prop. Seawater temp is still about 21 degrees here, warmer in the water than out. 20 minutes with a hookah will do the job or snorkeling and use a soft broom with a plastic head. use the back of the broom head on barnacles. Wet suit to cut down on barnacle cuts.

Anchor in shallow water over a sandy bottom if you want good visibility.
