In am replacing my bow sprit as is badly weathered plus a slight alteration to cutter
Looking for recomendations

Hi Mangrove
I had a old bloke(I man old bloke as well) drop in yesterday down at the boat. hes looking for a live aboard he love a cats but his budget is low also moving to Townsville and when gets there wants to buy a live aboard . I suggested a Wharram also said to him a Mangrove Jack hes just looking for more of a live aboard and poking around than sailing far and wanted some thing he could beach .
My thoughts were a Magrove jack reasonable amount of room inside,shallow draft and beach able what your thoughts on that Mangrovefrog ?

Yes shes a good boat and a nice owner not much money need to be spent there if you bought her thats for sure

hi all I`m new to sea breeze just noticed you have a link to my new boat (http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/empire-bay/sail-boats/h28-fibreglass-sloop/1058894306) I picked her up last Monday I am very happy with her. I was doing some research on installing a bow sprit and came across this post the boat definitely needs more power up front even with my big genoa up does anyone no of any compass h28`s that have added bowsprits?

Have not seen a compass H28 with a bow sprit,
Do you know what sort of keel ballast your boat was built with Kurt, Most were steel punchings a few had lead Ingots.in the compass I once read a story about one that had steel punching and they some how became wet and expanded from the rust the onwer spent many months removing all the steel punching inside and after removing them all glass her and laid lead ingots back in. But this is only happen to a couple and Compass made many H28s over the years



As you can see Kurt 8 mounting bolts holder to the deck 4 via the cleat and the other you can see forward on the bowsprit





this photo is under the deck and the photo shows 4 bolts coming through these are the cleat mounting bolts which also hold the bow sprit I think there is some strengthener built into the deck under the bowsprit area . In your case Id glass in some ply not sure how thick but at least 18 mm thick.

Thats the length past the bow on the Walkers
You would have to make some sort of bob stay mount in the bow



Heres a better photo of under the bowsprit Ive removed my anchor well and the chain will drop into the bow in an anchor locker . it will give you reference

hi thanks for your replies and information very inspiring , I think it be a great addition to the boat and I'm Shure it would fix the weather helm and the sail plan would be very easy to handle as a cutter single handed.
I removed all mast rake over the weekend but it did not make much difference to the weather helm. so a bowsprit make sense , most h28 have them and I think herreshoff designed it with one, so I have to see what I can come up with or afford

I have heard about issues with keels on some or possibly one compass h28 im not shure what sort of ballast I have but the keel and hull are in very good condition no swelling and no signs of osmosis had a survey done to .she was built in 1980 so I hope they work it out by then that steel was a bad idea.

Congratulations Kurt. She is a nice boat.
There are large numbers of these Compass H28 sloops in New Zealand, and I dont think they mess with bowsprits. On the original design the bowsprit was sometimes necessary to balance the mizzen sail, but you have a sloop. Talk to the New Zealanders- http://h28.org.nz/index.php/h28-forum/h28-association-public-forum

Maybe you should let the main out a bit more -that will help the weather helm and give you more drive. Modifying the mainsheet system by adding a traveller might also help. Once again the NZ guys for sure have been there, and will have the best answer.

hi yara thanks I don't believe it to be trim issue as the main was eased out to the point it was flapping around, I also think the main might benefit from a recut but is still in very good condition. a traveler would also be a great addition its is on the top of my to-do list
behind new engine mounts

i come from a multihull racing background so I might no be able to help adding more power and I also like the flexibility of a cutter rig .
but time will tell what I really need.

Mangrovefrog. beaching legs, all there used for is stability theres no weight . My Walker when I put her in the cradle at Blairgowerie she sat on the keel never moved and my keel is a not as wide on its bottom sides as a mangrove Jack . Even putting her back in the water running down the cradle rails to the water she just sat there
Mangrove jacks were not designed for a family Mangrove frog like you use yours Have a think back when you sailed her down the coast.

Excuse me for going off topic of this thread..
Is a big 'what if' that worries me.. i could expect a wallopping swell as the tide comes back, keel bouncing on the sand..
My kids got FASD they dont have concept of danger.
Anyway, i will pm you soon HG for the number of the rigger who lowered your mast.. my backstay bracket is severely fatigued..
