I would also include two additional cost catagories, "minor maintenance" and "major maintenance / upgrades". Minor maintenance covers all sorts of ongoing items; buying shackles you drop over the side, varnish / oil for touch up, etc etc. Major maintenance / upgrades depends a lot on the age of the boat and what your plan usage is. Keeping a boat in a river for occassional day trips is a lot cheaper than keeping a yacht for offshore cruising / racing. Over the last 10 years major maintenance / upgrades have included (on various yachts) osmosis treatment $6,500, heat exhanger replacement $9,000, battery replacements $,3500, fitting AIS $1,500, updating solar $2,500, etc, etc.

I do not drop shackles or actualy anything over the side apart from the odd hat. 9k for heat exchancher?
afraid so, just dug out the invoice and was pretty close, actual bill was over $10k, which included heat exchanger assembly, exhaust mixer, seawater pump, labour & full annual service. Actual heat exchanger was $4,600 plus gst. The surveyor's estimate was $10k. Not a big issue for me as it formed part of the discount on the purchase price. The PO tried saving money by patching the exhaust mixer himself, rather than doing a proper job and replacing the exhaust mixer. So it ate into the heat exchanger, so it was a writeoff.
The main point I was making it that you need to budget for unexpected costs, and major maintenance / upgrades can be expensive. Have a mate who just spent $10k on upgrading electronics, ie radar, chartplotter, AIS, etc.
