I've decided to go for the Cavalier 32 sailboat, I had a look at one on the hard at Hervey bay on Thursday and going to Sydney on Monday to have a look at two maybe three others.

I would like some ideas on raw water cooling and how hard would it be to convert to a heat exchanger.

Running sea water through an engine seems to me to be a bit sus. to me.

Cheers

I like the look of the Cav32, good choice.

I have a Bukh 3-cylinder and have added an external heat exchanger (made by Bowman) to convert to fresh water cooling. I did the work myself using bronze fittings and rubber hose.

You could also buy a Bukh heat exchanger for that engine - normally that fits onto the engine and is far less work. Contact Bukh at Taren Point, Sydney to check pricing and availability. Wild guess the hardware would cost around $1000.

The biggest benefit is that you can run the engine at 85-90C, something that's far better for a diesel (or petrol engines) than the 60C of raw water cooling. Better longevity, cleaner burning, better fuel efficiency.

Thanks liv 1987, been on the road to and from Sydney after submitting an offer and having it excepted on a 1984 Cav.32.

On my way home to Qld. will fly back to Sydney for the haul-out and survey early next month when arranged.

Thanks for the heads-up on the other boat, it also sounds good. I tried to reply to your pm but it's beyond me!!

Cheers

Bill

Hey Bill,

how did you go with this one?

Just curious because the Cav 32 is on my list as a desireable boat as I get older, not too big, but roomy and capable!

and which one did you decide on?

I have them all on my favourites and cant see any as being "under offer" or under contract yet.

a photo or 2 would be great.

cheers
Rick

Very nice yacht. I am envious.

I guess the yacht is sold without stove and the stove sold as a separate item to avoid the requirement for a gas certificate.

Not many gas fitters will do certification on yachts due to the liabilities involved.

Metho stoves are good but if you have a spillage you can have near invisible flames all over the place.

Kero stoves are excellent but hard to find these days. They can soot up the cabin badly if not maintained correctly.

That's the one Supersonic27, hauled her out yesterday 6thFeb. it went well but the diesel guy will need to look at the engine stop solenoid as it sticks closed and won't start, it's an an easy fix I think.

When the current owner bought the boat he stripped out every thing, the roden stove, oven, cabin door, radar,Magma rail mount bbq,Icom m700/at120 tuner, backstay antenna, 40w solar panel on board and a brand new one unopened,
storm main,#3 jib, spinnaker triradial with sock, katadyn 12v operated water maker and the list goes on for a page and a half, It might appear that I'm gloating The gear is at his home but will be put into storage at Woy Woy until I can get down again an transport it to the boat.

The owner raced the boat an didn't want all that stuff on board, when he went out for the day he took a thermos of tea and a bag of sangers so he didn't need the stove, but the eutectic fridge works well.

My wife is having knee op. on the 17th Feb. and only when she is back on her feet and driving will I be able to bring the boat back to QLD. Prob. mid to late April.

A friend of mine who has done a lot of sailing ( on s&s 34s the Meltemi Spelling? and other boats) and he has done the trip from Pittwater to QLD before,
my son is also keen to do the trip.

So thanks Morningbird and Supersonic27 that's a very kind offer, at the moment I'm right for crew, but in the future who knows??

Cheers

Bill
