Hi all,

I myself am not a big of having a fan in the cabin, but the admiral is a bit worried about getting slightly warm over summer while we are away.

The fans on offer at Whits seem rather expensive and flimsy, and with the relatively small blades, I think might be a bit noisy. But as I haven't actually tried one, perhaps I completely wrong. I generally prefer to drink something cool under shade in the cockpit until the heat subsides.

What is the collective thoughts of the group? And alternatives?

Yeah I've got a few of the 807 Sirocco 12 Volt fans on board and they do the job. I've got one for each sleeping location and the noise doesn't bother the admiral when on board and they seem to move enough air. I fold them down when sailing and never had any issues with the mount even when pounding along in 35knts for 48hrs.

Just got to clean the flu off the metal guard so it doesn't start to rust. Same issue you have with a fan at home.

You're right, not cheap!!!

Now if we want to be very stingy, along the side of the road where there are council cleanups there are dead PCs.

The fans in those are nearly always 12V, small and quiet. They also come with 4 mounting holes perfect for mounting across a vent to suck air in or out.

(They also generate power if the wind blows them (I made a wind speed meter doing that once).

I used one of them mounted on a chopping board to extract engine room fumes. They are very cheap to buy as well as a very low current draw.

Very low volume of air too though. OK if you want to just cool your face but if it's a 32' day or 28' night with 90% humidity not much chop. I've used a variety of them b4 but no comparison to Sirocco or the one I linked.

To get a proper volume of air the pc one $s goes up and up.

EC31, Have you thought of a wind scoop for your front hatch. You can make on quite easily or get one made for the price of a cpl of 12 volt fans. We cruise north Queensland and the NT/WA coastline almost continuously and have never had a 12v fan aboard. We have two wind scoops. One is quite small for when the wind is really blowing and the other is a lot bigger for when the wind is a lot lighter. You would be surprised how much wind it sends below and there is no wiring involved.

Of course with a scoop you don't have to worry about running wiring but you can also get fans with inbuilt lights that you could install in place of your current lights.

If mozzies and sand flies aren't a problem then sleeping in the cockpit is always an alternative if you have enough room there.

Gee, I never though of it but I sure like Trek's idea. You can get PC fans anywhere. Most people have an old PC lying around these days and the fans come out very easily.

Thanks to all for the feedback.

While a desk mounted 12v would normally be ideal, both from a volume and price aspect, it wont work all that well in the current sleeping setup we have. The admiral is quite taken with the Sirocco, but did baulk a little at the price.

I have a few left over PC's, most of them no longer in use because the fan bearings have seized or started rattling. But they would be cheap and easy to replace. There is already a large extractor type fan, but it has a huge power draw (being a relic from the 70's). They might be a good replacement for it, and can be left on overnight to just give enough airflow to be comfortable.

A wind scoop is something I will investigate as well, as we have a forward opening front hatch. Our cockpit is well set up for relaxing in, but the traveller is in exactly the wrong spot to allow us to lay down. But perhaps a couple of hammocks, suspended somewhere?
