Can Someone explain AIS ,Benifits and probs

I think my chartplotter is AIS compatable... is this a radar alternative or addittional equipment

There are plenty of manufacturers of AIS. I would suggest perusing the Comar site.

Other sources of info are the solo sailing sites such as www.offshoresolo.com/ and plenty of other yachting forums, mainly British where the use of AIS is widely used in the channel.

From what I have read... yachties who have it like it because they can call the appropriate vessel by name and pretty much all ways get a reply.
Without the name they often get ignored.

Yes!! When the radio transmission is something like:-"Bulk carrier off Cape Bowling Green X 3, this is the white yacht Cisco off your starboard bow X 3, are you receiving over??"

If the officer of the watch is alert, you might get a reply. If you can read the name of the ship it is perilously too close.

Comparatively speaking between a large bulk carrier and small yacht, the carrier is "Restricted in it's ability to manouvre."

In that circumstance, a person commanding a yacht who would claim right of way due to being a sailing vessel, needs their head read.

I always attempt to contact large vessels in my vicinity to let them know my intentions. They will usually thank you for contacting them and give you respect for doing it. The last thing they want is a marine incident.


yes, being able to call up the vessel buy name, a real advantage. and to have their heading and speed , bloody good !!!!

Agreed its an excellent tool to aid safety in particular for solo sailors.
How do you get it?(on a budget!)
It runs on VHF signals i understand??
Do you need a DSC VHF?
Can a DSC VHF run it or do you have to fork out for a chartplotter?
Can a handheld GPS receive it?

I believe that it runs through a vhf antenna and then to a chart plotter , either a pc or chartplotter.

But not sure , I'm just starting to look into it myself.

I'm sure that someone out there in the web world , will know the answer to your questions.

I think that a good start would be comar distributor.

looks like the go might be, to go the whole hog and install a transmitter/receiver unit with seperate vhf antenna and gps antenna and the interface with plotter or pc. around $1000 supply. package deal.[ big ships can see you as well !!]

rather than receive unit only $5oo plus arial and gps ant.

I have seen USB receive only units advertised in the UK for 119 pounds, has any one seen them here for similar pricing?

check around on the net ...i found a site where you can convert
an old scanner to receive the signal and transfer via usb to software
on your laptop.

hi We have Class B send and recieve version and would not be with out it. We have ours linked to the chartploter, radio, radar & laptop. The AIS cost $950 you can get cheaper or go over the top. ours is a Digital Yacht AIT1000.
You can see the ships coming for miles & their cours depending on the day. gives you yof time to get the hell out of their way. but there is nothing like keep your eyes open!!!
