OK, just purchased a new boat which hasn't been used for a while.

Can anybody advise on the best method to clean the freshwater tanks?

More info required,
what type? Are they removable? Do they have inspection openings?

there are many ways, this is my way on Swanson
sticked the hand throug inspection opening,
sponged with dishwahing detergent, a bit of spraying/ rinsing,
fill up 30 % with half a cup of bleach, leave it for couple of saling
weekends, smell of the bleach will disappear, but guarantee
no nasties left behind

If the internals of the tank are visibly clean ,
I use Milton Antibacterial solution same stuff they sterilize baby bottles / Home brew kits and bottles .
Kills 99.9% of germs.
Once I fill my tanks at marinas I usually throw some in just in case I pick something up from the freshwater feed .
No smell either, comes in liquid or tablet form

Sounds like bleach or Milton (depending on how clean the tank looks following inspection) and a long soak is the way to go for the first deep clean at least. Similar to what we used to do with potable water on trains. It was always difficult to get rid of the bleach smell/taste, but want to be sure to get out all the nasties!!

Do anybody have experience with the proprietary chemicals that are available?

Just clarify difference between bleach and Milton. For serious clean use bleach, regardless of
amount, you end up with smell.
Miltons, no smell, no need to rinse, safe even for babies utensils, often use in home brewing,
cheese making etc.
To use them, it would be more less prevention, 1 tablet 2 liters of water for cleaning.

For drinking water, brews etc I use a 20 litre container with a tap on the side and store it in the shade. $5 from my dentists, they get distilled water in them. Don't have to be so fussy about the inbuilt tank if you have decent water to make tea!

Thanks Ramona, as you say its all about "tea making".I think your approach might be easier, taking bottled water aboard for tea and using the on board water just for cleaning etc. I know many cruisers use this approach, I guess i just aspired to having 400ltrs on tap!!
