Hi all-Sad to say at this point that Cool Runnings has been sold after almost 15 years of ownership, but time to move on.
With that, I am to sail her out of Wollongong Harbour for the last time and proposing Saturday the 25th for delivery to JB.

This is probably more directed to Ramona and Loose Change(or anyone else) who have the local knowledge, but what is the current situation in navigating up Currambene Creek?.

Our Yacht draws 1.68m and unfortunately by my estimate, it is a falling tide in the afternoon of that day with a 0.2m low scheduled @ 1630 hrs. If unable to get up there, what are the possible options outside of that please.

Since the name continues on with the yacht, I may have to vacate the forum under the present guise as well-Not sure of the protocols there.

Cheers C.R.

I haven't been up that creek for years (Only that other one without a paddle) and am not really in a position to comment about the current state of the channel. How far up are you thinking of going?

I don't know where the new owners are thinking as yet, but I assume in and around the nest of moorings there not too far upstream, near Huskisson.

I remember as a kid, we used to stay at Webster's old cottages and the sand flies there would almost lift me up and carry away!

I made the mistake of going to Myola, (the northern entrance to Currambene that runs back to Calala Beach and Bay) and taking nearly three weeks to recover from the sand fly bites.

If you like I can take a run out to Hussky on the bike and ask some of the locals what the crrek is like at the moment. I may do that anyway, any excuse to go for aride.

Would appreciate that mate, as I don't care to be the laughing stock of the 'Hussky' pub patrons, while piled up high on the sand!

Plenty of water in the creek as long as you keep to the channels. The entrance at low tide might be close. If in doubt you could deliver to Callala Bay.

The new owner should know, he bought the boat so should know whether he has access to the creek at all tides. There are a lot of large yachts and catamarans up that creek. The shallow spot is at the mouth and if its bumpy with some swell in from the Heads you might have a hole just at the wrong time. I was there 12 months ago in a power boat.

This will be the new owners first yacht and they have spent some time crewing on yachts.

There is nothing like actually owning a yacht where the demographic changes immensly, hence my need to do some homework on this, being the skipper.

I have only been up there in a powerboat too, but a real long time ago.

May save a few tears-Thanks

Speaking to the blokes on the whale watching boats, you have to come across the entance to the creek on a high tide. If you miss the tide there is a designated mooring and anchoring area to the left of the pub, Marked "A" on the picture.

Come in on the leads staying slightly left of centre, definately avoiding the area marked "AVOID" that green cardinal mark is in only two feet of water as the sand bank there has grown huge.

Continue till nearly abeam of the wharf before turning upstream, all cardinal marks are now good, it's only that first green one that will cause the boys in the pub to chuckle if you stray.

Hope the pics make it a bit clearer.

Good Man LooseChange-See, you do give a damn afterall!

Really appreciate all the detail work you have gone to for this.

Based on your information and the tide predictions, I think we will grab the public mooring and leave the 'cheers' from the Pub to some other poor unsuspecting bugger.

Have cruised JB quite a few times on various yachts, but never went up the creek.

Most times, we have dragged anchor in that fine silica sand apparent down there.
On one occasion anchored off Long Beach and during the night, I rocketed out of the bunk when realising the yacht was out in the middle.
A couple of things happened-I had no clothes on,got to the companionway and then stopped to assess the situation.
Trouble was the guy behind me didn't and copped a view he'll never forget!

The info about the entrance looks spot on. I was there three weeks ago and ran aground in the entrance because I was too close to the green mark. Luckily I have a lift keel!

depending on the tide it does get pretty shallow between the first bend and the Woolamia boat ramp area. I was surprised but again have a lift keel.

I was told some of the larger yachts will have to wait for a very high tide indeed before they will exit.

Absolutely great spot btw. Can't wait to go back.

Regards

Stephen

Appreciate the info Madmouse-It has been decided not to go up Currambene Creek, due to the predicted low tide this weekend. Will now opt to take up a mooring at Callala Bay.

The forecast for this Saturday looks interesting, starting with a soft N/something and a southerly change mid/late afternoon.
The weather patterns down here at present are quite unpredictable and getting indifferent info from the BOM, Seabreeze and others.

To LooseChange-Sounds like an interesting m/cycle. A mate of mine bought a Piaggio MP3 recently.Best fun he has had and after 40 bikes he should know.
Apparently it does not fall over like the others on the Melbourne tram tracks!

Thanks again.

Gilera is owned by Piaggio and the Fuoco is very similar to the MP3.

I have to go to Callala Bay now to collect my beers? ...damn, life is hard these days

The forecasts are certainly changing dramatically for the weekend. Looks like a fresh Southerly Saturday now. I will be offshore around the banks area Saturday and will keep an eye out for you. Or I could be dinghy sailing out of Callala with the grandkids it depends on the last minute forecast.

Yes Ramona-Based on the current forecast, this Saturday has now been postponed. The wind looked good earlier this week, but to no avail now.

I have a building job in Jindabyne next week, so the following weekend is out as well.

Have to reschedule the trip and I will advise accordingly so that LooseChange can pick up his beer as promised(might be a bit stale by then however!).

Hope to see you around the banks area hooking up a fish or two..

Cheers

Cool Runnings is now at Jervis Bay.

We cast off at Wollongong yesterday at 0730 and motored for over an hour.Once the wind filled in,it was good sailing running square under kite.
Off Kiama the wind had increased further and so we doused the spinnaker and went back to a poled out headsail.
We gybed at Shoalhaven Bight and broad reached back across towards Point Perpendicular going over the Banks area that Ramona mentions previously.
This section goes from about 50 metres in depth up to around 13 metres and is akin to white water rafting.

Once around the point it was a tight reach across Jervis Bay into Huskisson with a solid 25 knots and gusts nearing 30 and so we had a solid sail making the 48 miles(rhumbline) in a bit over 6.5 hours.

It was decided to take a public mooring outside the creek.Funnily enough a Dolphin turned up for the last hurrah on picking up the mooring.

With the handover now complete to the new owners,we had a beer at the club overlooking Currambene creek.
The green cardinal mark indicated on Loosechange's aerial pic was in fact parked about 2 metres high on the sand and so glad we did not go inside te Creek.

Signing off now-Thanks to all,Regards C.R.

I have received a message from Cool Runnings informing me he has alerted the owners of the boat and hopefully they will deal with it.

Cool Runnings has terminated his membership of the forum and therefore couldn't post a reply.
