Hi Everyone, was wondering if any of you know the A to Z's for servicing a diesel engine.
I have a 33hp Volvo Penta.
The reason I am considering servicing the motor myself is that the local agent on the Marina where I am parked are not to bright and there service to seize rate seems a little to much in there favor and my pocket could not handle the abuse.
I would appreciate it if you respond or could send me in the direction of a site where I could find such information.

I service my Volvo 2003 (30hp) motor. Once a year I replace sump oil and filters (oil & fuel). Coolant should be replaced 2-3 years.
Its properly a good idea to repalce the the water pump impeller every two years or at least keep a spare on board and know how to replace it as they can fail without notice.
If you are confident enough you could adjust the valve clearance every few years.
The exchange unit should be removed and serviced every 3-4 years.
I use all Volvo parts as they are not much more expensive than the after market ones.
Unless you what a major overall theres not much less to do.
You will have to buy a suction pump to get the sump oil out thur the dipstick hole. Withworths have them for $60-$120 depending on size.

Thank you Cisco and Seabird for your help. Have taken on board what you said Seabird and have changed oil and coolant so far, bought new impeller just in case.
Thanks again.

Rule of the 7 P's - Propper pre planning prevents pi** poor performance.
The below is my way of doing things and might not be what others prefer but has stood me in good stead. Sure there are costs involved but I have never had an engine failure with a boat diesel engine by following the below ... works for me.
I generally keep a maintenance log book for the whole boat, divided up in sections so I know exactly where I am at any given time. I include things like slipping, inspections, what kind of paint I used and anti-fouling used etc. Type of oil, filter type, belt type, coolant type ... the lot. A good maintenance log also goes a long way towards a successful sale when it comes time to upgrade or change direction.
Engine Service Annual:
Each Year - Change Oil - Oil and Fuel Filters - General Inspection
Every 2 Years - Change Water Pump Impeller
Every 3 Years - Service Heat Exchange System - Change Coolant - New Belts
Every 4 Years - Valve Clearance - Injector Service - New Start Batteries
Every 5 Years - Recond Starter and Alternator
