Can anyone think of a good reason (other than redundancy) to have 2 active fresh water pressure pumps? My Oceanis 40' has two shurflo fresh water pressure pumps installed.

They're plumbed after a manifold which has the fore and aft water tanks as inputs and one output which goes to both pumps via a filter. (There is another output from the manifold to a foot pump with a spout over the galley sink). Taps on the manifold can close either or both inputs.

The pumps are switched electrically via a 2 position switch so that only one can ever be running at a time.
The outputs from each pump are then inputs to a Y valve with the output of that Y valve to the accumulator. (There's a T piece downstream of the Y valve to pressurise/supply the hot water tank too).

I can see that if one pump fails I can switch to the other immediately (electrical switch and throw valve) but it seems like a lot of extra complication in the system. I reckon I could change out a pump within half an hour if required, probably even quicker with encouragement from a half showered wife.

Am I missing something worthwhile in this setup? Interested if anyone has seen this before.

Can you balance out the tanks using this set up? Just a thought.

You've got me thinking now - I might install this setup!! I've had a pump/switch fail.

Oh I hear you, don't worry. When my wife is on board her happiness is a high priority.

Pump No. 2 stopped working the other day so I started looking more closely at the setup. I had thought it was one pump per tank and that's how I've been using it for the last year or so. Whenever I switched tanks I switched pumps.

Thanks for the comments/advice gents, I'll look into whether it's the pump or pressure switch and get pump #2 going again.
