Done it three times. Twice with gales midway, once with a big southerly early on and then calms.

Sydney. Arrived back in Brissy once.
Went there from Sydney via Lord Howe in July a decade ago. A great way to go if you like 70kts plus wind and 10m plus swell. Next time I will definitely sneak up the coast high enough to escape the SW gales.
One we got in the trades it was a great trip and I loved New Caledonia. The place has one of the largest coral reef lagoons so you can cruise for weeks in sheltered water. Port Moselle was a nice place to stock up on stores and sample the great cafes. Good idea to practice your old high school french before you go though. And yes I agree with Chris take stormsails and a good drogue or two.
it really sounds great. theres some great surf there too. Yes the plan would be to go from southport.
If you can keep us updated would love to know what people thought about the mighty top hat.
Btw Steve I think I found someone else to annoy with questions about the Top hat 25. He's an old sailor with PTSD who just sails outside of Darwin ( where I am doing tug work for the next two months) he reckons he will take me out sailing on Sunday.
Good luck steve
