On my bukh DV20 the last owner made a exhaust bend out of gal pipe with a steel flange and a cooling pipe welded into it to point it in the right direction a 90 degree socket is screwed on the end to couple up, to the exhaust hose


The other thing I have here soon is a `sail drive off a DV 24 the4 legs been re coed but the gear box needs work




Im using the motor but the rest is there if some one needs any thing including the leg

No it was in Melbourne Yarra . The DV 24 has the same engine block as the DV20 the heads are different the Injectors are on the opposite side on the DV24
plus a few improvements. I was going to freshen the DV 20 and this Bukh DV24 came up so I bought it . Ill give it a minor rebuild over the next 8 months and fit it next winter..
My old Dv20 still goes well but wanted to freshen it up as over the next 15 years I just want to sail and do minor maintenance to my boat so when this DV24 came up I thought it would be a good up grade with out a lot of expense of some other brand of engine.

The out board leg has had a rebuild but the sail drive gear box has clutch trouble ( want for a better word)

Beg to differ. While it still has measurable shape I would be using it as a template to manufacture a new one using s/s steel, use the new one and keep the old one as a future template.

From what Ive read stainless engine pipes wont last that long on a Bukh about the same as the original Bukh engine pipe . I was thinking about about buying one for the DV 20 but the DV 24 has an original engine pipe so I wont bother now

I reckon if you have a s/s flange and pipe off the back of the engine it will last for many years. Just my qualified and experienced opinion.

I was going to make a s/s engine pipe but after I bought this dv24 which has a new Bukh engine pipe installed so that will do for a few years I don't think they last that long.
My main concern is the flow rate of cooling water out of the engine via the engine pipe Mine as its home made is open 1/2
Ill be looking at what the original has

Electrolysis will kill a raw water exhaust elbow made of stainless steel a lot faster than one made from mild steel or cast iron ,have seen this quite often

If the water injection pipe extends to near the end of the exhaust elbow it should last as long as anything else.

You are right though in that hot salt water will eat out stainless very quickly as it did the s/s muffler/water trap I had on a previous yacht. Depending on heights and water levels in the yacht a water trap is not always necessary. Once the water mixes with the exhaust it muffles it quite enough.
