I am now about to replace my winches and the screw holes don't line up.
Would you please tell me what material I fill the old holes with to gain maximum grip?
I may have to drill into part filler and part boat.

Epoxy filler. Either buy it ready to go or make your own from epoxy resin and various fillers. I use micro balloons and brass or stainless filings or even clean sand. Mix and add fillers till you end up with a tooth paste consistency.

Romana the sand sounds like a great idea. I will buy a carbide tipped drill if necessary.
I tried to buy epoxy filler at Bunnings Kirrawee yesterday. They said they didn't sell it. But I will try at Caringbah.

Another choice is either Devcon plastic metal or JB Weld. These are just metal filled epoxy in two parts like Araldite. Use 100mph tape under the holes to seal off the area, mix up the glue and fill the holes. Apply a little heat to make the glue a little runny and then let it set 24 hours then it can be drilled, tapped etc. Both are dark grey in colour. You could also just add a filler to 24 hour Araldite if that's more convenient.
Always make sure the area is clean and dry when using epoxy.
