Hello all

Kankama has not got a lot of headroom over her doubles and so I want to keep the new mattress down to 10cm thick. Has anyone used just a memory foam mattress on its own? Any recommendations? I can just go to Clark rubber and get a mattress but am open to any better ideas.

cheers

Phil

The cushions on our double are 9cm and quite firm. We have put a soft overlay on top (looks like an egg container, off-white in colour) which stops the sore hips. Think we got it from Spotlight, but I can check with the better half if you need to know. The cushions we had made at the Foam Booth in Artarmon.

I use 5mm memory foam as a mattress in my swag, and have found it far superior to any other mattress I've tried using.

Try these guys. Never dealt with them before but reckon they will have a say.

If you do go to Clark get a queen or king take the fabric off it and get them to cut and glue it. Rather then getting foam by the m about $300 cheaper for no advantage.

You could also try Rockdale matress factory, made to order, variable options reasonable pricing.

Hi Phil,
Nothing wrong with a 10cm Clarkie mattress. I bought one of them to replace the spring mattress because of the same headroom problems. I had mine over a flat MDF sheet and only found it a bit hot and sweaty when I got to Qld in humid conditions but once I changed the MDF sheet to a slatted base from Ikea I had no more issues and with the extra spring it was as comfy if not better then the original spring mattress. If you don't already have a slatted base I'd recommend the Ikea spring slatted base, just leave the ends free to float . The one I bought was the double bed version of this one, www.ikea.com/au/en/p/luroey-slatted-bed-base-80160216/

Since you'll probably spend 1/3 of your time on it make sure you are happy with whatever you get. Maybe drop in your local Ikea and try their 10cm mattress on the slatted base to get the feel for it or for something even thinner try one of the mattress pads like the 7cm Tromsdalen pad straight on the spring slats.

The slated base sounds really good. But will it still work if you were to cut it to suit a v birth?

Never tried cutting mine as the width was fine. You can reduce the length easily enough but if you need to trim the width I'd take equal amounts off both ends of each slat. Taking a few cm off each end shouldn't reduce the spring much as long as the ends can remain floating.
