I've written a (very) simple chart plotting map using Google Maps.

http://www.nobletech.com/maps/chartplotter.html

I intend to add option to to overlay official nautical charts

In the meantime, any feedback would be welcome.

Disclaimer: This tool is provided free of charge "as is" without any warranty or guarantee and should not be used as a replacement for a nautical map.

Good point! I've added some instructions right under the map.

Basically, plot points by clicking on the map or entering decimal latitude, longitude pairs. Click on the link button to generate a link for sharing. Navigate the map using the usual Google Maps nav controls.

BTW, I've only tested Chartplotter with the most recent versions of browsers as follows:

Chrome 4 (Win7, Mac10.6)
Firefox 7 (Win7, Mac10.6)
IE 9 (Win7)
Safari (Mac10.6)

Please upgrade to the most recent version of your browser.
Chrome is best though!

Might be a tad techie for me but I will give it a go.

Should I assume it is only useful when online??

What advantages does it have over other free programs like seaclear 2?

Seaclear is a Windows app. My app is a web app that runs in any web browser, probably including the one of your mobile phone. (I've tested in on Android phones).

That said, my app is purely an online app that does not run off line (which is a limitation of using Google Maps). I envisioned it mainly as trip planning app though.

There are programmes out there to run Google Maps offline in Seaclear for serious navigation.

I don't recommend using Google Maps alone for serious navigation though.
