My wife and I are considering an overnight sail from Fremantle WA to Busselton WA leaving around late December. Since starting to sail 3 years ago we've only done day sails to date in local waters - Fremantle to Mandurah being the longest. The boat already complies with 95% or more of items listed in the Fremantle Sailing Club cruising section's safety information (the "green book") and will comply 100% or more by December. We've done coastal navigation courses, sailing, etc, so the boat and us are fine.
We could do 3 day sails stopping overnight at Mandurah/Dawesvile, Bunbury then Busselton but the question is this..... does anyone have any route tips, typical weather patterns tips, hazards to avoid tips or other tips if we sail directly from Freo to Busselton?

Hey Zilla, As you know, it is an expoased coast with no shelter from dawesville to Bunbury. Main choice is whether to go inside or outside the reefs. if the breeze is predomintely easterly, then go inside, close to shore for sailing in flat water. if south or s-west (& fresh), go outside the reefs - You don't want to be pinned between the coast & the reefs with a fresh breeze on the nose. Northerly breeze - You can do wahetever!

If you do have a favourable breeze for a nice quick beam reach /run transit, then go all the way to Busso in one go. We did the trip down to race week in feb this year, leaving Freshie at dawn, and got into Busso marina around 9 that night.

Drag a red lure in the waters of Bunbury - You are sure to get a Tuna!! :-)

PS - If it's worth anything here is some video of our trip down for your viewing....

Hey Zilla

I have done the trip a few times, in a Peterson 30, M27 and My Spacesailer 18.

Forecast is the most important thing to look for. In the M27 and the SS 18 we did it non stop Busso - Freo with a decent Southerly for the most of it. Streight line outside the reefs. Was a relatively easy sail took about 22 hours.

In December you are likely to get a bit of wind on the nose heading south, we used the SE to take us out off the coast and the SW brought us back.

Its definately worth doing ... will have a great trip! People at Bunbury sailing club are really freindly if you stop in there.

Have a good One

Thanks for the tips guys. Your videos make it look very pleasant.
We planned to do this trip a while back, from Mandurah to Busselton but the forecast was 3 days of 20-30 knot southerly wind so we didn't bother. How pleasant or unpleasant would it be if we persisted against such winds? I'm guessing the seas would build quite a bit with such a fetch. We sail a 6 tonne 27 ft wooden gaffer.

6t x 27' heading south into 20-30kts..?? It would be slow, wet & bumpy, but I'm sure you'll get there. Make sure the sails & gear are up to it, and reef early. Stay outside the reefs in that case - If seascikness / fatigue wear you down, you can bang on SW into clear ocean until things improve. Watch out for shipping as you get coser to Bunbury. Agree that KBYC is a must stop if you go via Bunbury.

KY - Nice vid! It's always great to see "little" boats getting out into the ocean! Steer 150..?? Heading home to KBYC..??
