I've used a Reefurl system (www.furlings.com) on my 6 tonne gaffer for the past 4 years and never had a problem. It is simple and reliable.
I had one of those on a 42 ft Peterson. They are simple and reliable as well as being fairly cheap. There are a few furlers of that type that have a halliard on the furler itself rather than having a swivel at the top and using the halliard on the mast.
The thing I do not like about them is that they induce forestay sag.
