Interesting article in IEEE Spectrum on autonomous and remotely-operated cargo ships. It is expected such vessels will start to ply the oceans between 2020 and 2025. There are all kinds of implications for Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and Collision Regulations (ColRegs). I can foresee a time when AIS transponders (or something similar) will be required on All vessels sailing in or across shipping lanes, not just commercial vessels.

Roll Royce are making a crew less shipping system be ready in 2020

The best thing about my shipping system is it can carry any cargo just like a semi trailer or a fork lift
The catamaran is the truck or the forklift
No dredging and the port water stays in the port it was used to submerge or float the the boat
two sizes just like a normal pallet jack a national line and an over seas line
there a few more secrets I can not tell just yet
But image many cat all the same and as the first arrives at the destination port and off loads its cargo it back out and goes to another port finger and pick up maybe 5 empty freight pods and proceeds back to port Headland
The other cats pick up general freight and back load much the same as a semi trailer does
