You can still be DSQ'd if you impede a boat say port n starboard on the line [ you on port ] .
Or any boat that is still racing...

I would love to have a ruling on this one from an expert.
I got a DSQ from a race at Gosford Sailing Club and lost points causing a lost championship in the 1990s because after my bow crossed the finish line we motored away. It was a no wind day and our speed was 0.0001 kts. The official at the finish line insisted that the whole boat had to cross the line not just the bow.
Trek that sounds like a case of premature combustion ..
Mate you should have crossed the line fully...

thats an interesting one !!!! so , i,m sure the time is taken when the bow crosses the line . .... so ...therefore you are finished .....therefore should be able to motor home .....

Thats what the official said. At the time we were talking another 15 minutes to get the stern over the line.
But the rule I understood was "a boat finishes when any part of her hull, or crew or equipment in normal position, crosses the line from the course side"....

Our bow crossed the finish line, then I started motor and headed off and the finish line official called out we hadn't finished because the whole boat hadnt crossed the line. I told him rubbish its the bow that counts. Later we got a DSQ (or might have been DNF).

Looking at the racing rules of sailing you are correct in what you say so i don't see how they could DSQ you
Down here at Port Huon we always give a horn signal as each boat finishes and sometimes it seems to be ages after i think we have crossed the line that the horn goes off (not saying this was the case in your example)

Thanks Don. Thats what I thought. I remember at the time the officials that would have presided over a protest were all in the bar after the race and insisted I was wrong (or more likely didn't want to be shown that they were wrong) so no point arguing so I had another beer!

Just to clarify my earlier comment about the Port Huon finish line
The Race Officals here give the horn when the bow of the boat crosses the line but because i am only seeing one end of the line a lot of the time i think we have crossed before we actually have

Has it still got the piece of inch ply glued to the transom to make it measure by finishing it forward in the measurement jig.

That's my son sailing my old boat. Yes it was also one of the fastest boats about till the introduction of wingmasts. That's my version of a winged mast in the photo. Turned out too stiff for my weight! The hull has many modifications over a Mk 1 Vanguard. The obvious one is the transom and the seriously thinned down gel coat. Under the cockpit floor there is a sliding drawer for lead weights so she could still pass the weight balance regs.

I have recollection of helping to renew the floor now I think of it.
The transom ply was to get is measure for I think about the 1993 Gold Cup.
The hull was to small and under the tolerances so by adding an inch to the back the measurement points moved back and it had enough hull volume to measure.
the draw was to optimise the Lamboley test.

I used the word "generally "because there is precedence for a capsized dinghy with gear and crew secure, finishing a race.
I've seen many instances of boats starting their engine before the entire hull is over the line, and would consider it courteous. For example, I've seen a breeze that's died right at the finish, so that literally boats are piling up on the finish line to the extent that there's no room for other finishers unless engines are started. Especially with multiple divisions finishing on the same line, and larger faster boats finishing behind. I recall something about being clear of the finish line referring to instances such as not being at risk of hitting the finish marks... I mean it'd be no good poking your bow through and then drifting onto the pin end mark, or starting your engine to avoid doing so. There was a SA thread on this topic recently. I'll look for it.
