Hi
I have a Hutton 24 that I have just started racing. Initially the head sail was catching on the rigging but after changing to a single oval shackle on the clew that's sorted.
My continuing problem is the sail goes over the life lines and then gets stuck on the stanchions and lines. I try to flick it off but it is so far behind the lines it wont come back over with out going up and getting it over.
I am using a #2 with a single roller on each side. Maybe I need more?
Any thoughts

This is a bug bare for most yachts. If it is just catching you could try fitting pulleys to the life line. The are special split one just for this purpose. The other option is to have a high cut jib made or recut you existing but this is not good if you want to race. The only real option is to keep on skirting the jib when you want to bring the jib on. With practice you should be able the tack and keep the jib inside the life lines. I solved the problem by training my wife to skirt it.

I don't know if you've tried it or if it'll work for you but it has for me on a number of boats. What I find is that the lifelines get forced down by the weight of the sail at the bow so from the cockpit I can whack the lifelines (not too whacking but a short sharp hit) which of course produces tension at the pointy end of the lifelines which in turn flicks the sail back inside the lifelines. Have you tried this?

How tight are your lifelines?

These

Or try a thin piece of poly pipe with the life lines threaded through it, lifelines need to be tight though

I bought my boat from a guy who raced it and looked like he was having the same trouble. All he
did was drop the top lifeline from the first stanchion and tie it to where the bottom lifeline is
attached to the pulpit. I suppose it worked because thats how it was when I bought the boat.
I put it back where it belongs because Missus felt unsafe going forward.

Whoever races without the top lifeline attached is ....... lets just say foolish, not much respect for his fore-decky

and yes calling "Skirt" ...... or something similar, sometimes with a few added expletives seems to work well too, fore-decky should be watching for that stuff in tacks anyway.

Single handers can yell their hearts out, bra, knicker, skirt!

Long live the tennis balls!
