Yeah, interesting. Back in the good old days, cats used to not sink. Not so much the case nowadays, although some may say that being awash is not sinking, it is much more than a light composite cat would do.

From AI, Western Australia hosts one of the largest humpback whale migrations in the world, with over 45,000 whales traveling up to 13,000 kilometers from Antarctica to the tropical Kimberley region and back<
My guess is that a whale took out his saildrive in the middle of the night.

He is lucky to have been rescued out there.

Suggest most likely chance for a rescue is Australian Territorial Islands around NW approaches to Australia. ‘Stop the boats’

Scuttlebutt from a friend of a friend says it was again the escape hatch that failed. Lagoons have an issue with escape hatches. Considering how few Lagoons capsize and how many sink from escape or saildrive issues it does seem strange that there are any left with escape hatches in them. At least put the hatches in the bridgedeck floor if you need one, then you won't sink the boat if it fails.

I would be buying a lot of lottery tickets.
How the bejeesus did they find him without an EPIRB?
1000kms SE of Christmas Island puts him...700 odd kms from WA!

-If one people smuggling boat reaches the mainland the government get whacked, two Federal elections over the last 25 years have been heavily influenced by small wooden boats (which are hard to find) trying to make it to Australia.

If your going to be partially submerged off the coast of Australia and want to be found, do it in that region or off a capital city.

In a past life, I spent years up there, bobbing around, lingering with intent, playing Uckers.
