OK lets narrow it down a bit...

What country are you in?
What sort of boat is it.. mono hull, catamaran, trimaran?
What size... 3 m long or 30m long?
Ocean racer, Keel boat or 'off the beach' boat?
Trailer Sailor or Dinghy?
What sort of sail configuration?

Or to make it MUCH easier a picture/s would be nice.

Ben Lexcen designed Swinger? The given dimensions seem to fit the description.
Just a guess

The Observers Book of Sailing Craft of Australia and New Zealand written by Peter Campbell: "the Super Swinger has become a standard training dinghy for many youngsters since this 11 footer was designed and marketed by Milller and Whitworth of Brookvale, New South Wales. It is a versatile dinghy in that the youngsters can first get the feel of sailing with a cat rig then move on to a sloop rig, and finally try their hand at carrying a spinnaker. The boat is strictly one design but comes with all the fittings required."
LOA: 3.35 meters
Sail Area: 8.2 msq
Spinnaker: 6 msq
Crew: 1-2

The ensign in the picture featured in this book is indeed an S inside a colored box but as the pic is black and white the color is not known. The hull is very low freeboard, the Mainsail has a full length batten and two leach battens and the spinnaker hoist point on mast as at the hounds.

Hope that helps.

What wonderful resource you have been. It's a Swinger!

So did i do well?

One more question.
Is there some out of date register where the sail numbers are recorded?

Having another guess here, I would say no and with the included five sails you have, unless they are all the same number how would you know which is original to the boat.

Boats often have an ID number somewhere on the boat....

The 'Laser' class number (which is also the sail number) marking is below the bottom rudder mounting point.
'Careel' yachts put them in one of the rear hatches.
