Looking for advice on insurance for a yacht approx $10k and 23ft.

I tried Youi and they won't insure it for some reason even the sales rep couldn't work out. They did a quote and sent it through but when I went to pay for it they said
It gave them some error..
I tried Club Marine and they want a out of water survey which I don't really want to do.

I was looking at Anchorage and Pantaenius but not really sure as I've heard they are even more expensive than club marine..

I'd rather not get an out of water survey. Any other thoughts?

Hi Patto,
Club Marine have a history of dumping older boats for no reason . When pressed, they claim it is no longer economically viable for them.
I had great delight in telling the Club Marine rep in Hammo where to go when he was fawning over me for business on my much more expensive new toy.
I use Nautilus, found them very good to deal with.

I'll save you the trouble on the Club Marine part there - they won't insure anything worth less than $1000 a foot. That's a direct quote from one of their reps.

Youi not doing it is odd. I know they can have some strange issues with their systems at times (had to do a bit of back and forth to upgrade to include racing cover). Might just come down top getting the right agent who knows how to whisper sweet nothing's to their computer.

Can't comment on the other insurers.

Try RACQ, they don't mind insuring cheaper boats for about the same premium as Club Marine.

NRMA also do yachts, no questions asked, just insist on an inwater survey if required and get a shipwright [not and expensive surveyor] to come aboard for a cuppa on condition he writes a brief report saying its OK

If the insurance company ask for a survey i would check with them on who they will accept one from because sometimes it needs to be from a accredited surveyor, not a shipwright or a boat builder

very strange lot these insurance companys , after 7 years of fully comp ins with racq , they cancelled my insurance because they didn't receive my direct debit in aug , I went to my bank today to ask why and they said they had no reason to deny the dd as there was plenty of funds . racq said they couldn't reinstate the policy , so I would have to take out a new policy and they would realign the new one with the old . after 20 mins of filling in the quote on the phone , the girl came back to me after submitting it to the underwriters team and said they couldn't insure my vessel , as there policy was not to insure any vessels over 10m in length , she tried to explain to the underwriting team that they have insured the boat for the last 7 years , but they maintain it was there policy not to insure over 10m , and it must have slipped by the system . I then asked what would have happened , if an unfortunate event occurred that would require me to make a claim , she couldn't give an answer . which makes me wonder whether racq has taken my premiums for the last 7 years without any risk . anyway to cut a long story short . youi had no hesitation today in insuring my boat , but to be fair as my boat was deemed uninsured , I didn't have time to play the market

I insured our 28 foot, 40 year old compass with Club Marine for around $450 at a 9 grand valuation. Very happy with both service and price. I did have a pretty good survey. If they carry on in this way, they will be first call for any, more expensive replacement.

Oh, and I've no connection with them.

Cheers

I didn't renew my policy with Nautilus. I got sick of them changing the agreed details from year to year. Ended up with QBE with a policy that looks good (covers everything I need) and with more flexibility than Nautilus. Premium finished at about half that of Nautilus. (I always suspected Nautilus were a bit expensive).
I can recommend NOT to ever use Trident. Very shonky.

Food for thought re insurance of cheap boat:

Ive got Martzcraft 35 thats mostly renovated, I put a new engine in, re-rigged her, nice new carpet etc. Cost of boat was $35K originally so I put it in fairly "cheap" bracket.

For comprehensive insurance on her I paid Club Marine a stack of $$$ for a long time. Then one year at renewal time they told me they wont re insure it unless I have it surveyed. This is a garbage request.

Half the surveyors I have met (having been in the marine business) have no idea about anything. Their surveys consist of counting the light switches and listing if they work or not. Critical stuff like whats actually inside the hull they have no idea about unless they xray the hull which they dont. The big ogre osmosis in fibreglass can mostly be hidden by a dubious seller for example. There is no real way to test the integrity of rigging without sampling it and taking to a metallurgist. Which they don't. To check a diesel you need at least to idle it for a long time then run it under full power for a while. I have never seen a surveyor do that. They just write down the engine number and charge for it. A critical factor is the quality of the fuel in the diesel tank and I have never seen a surveyor check that!! So surveys on cheaper boats aren't worth much in my opinion. So I told Club Marines computer to get lost.

Now, to be stingy, I decided to insure myself. I got third party insurance only and a Trek Transponder on boat. I think its highly unlikely that anything could happen to the boat so fast that I couldn't get there in time to fix it if alerted by the Transponder. Since I decided to "insure myself" I saved around $3000. But as said there is a risk that I could lose the boat if something happened so quickly I couldn't get to it to fix or anyone I called couldn't get there either. But having owned around 10 different boats over 30 years that never happened. While on board the risk factors I can see are sinking it by hitting something sharp at full speed, so we take care navigating and we only do nice weather sailing. Its possible we could have a fire but if cooking on the metho stove its always supervised and we have fire extinguishers. Our mast could also be struck by lightning. I will take my chances.

So there is an alternative to getting ripped of by insurance companies. Get third party and secure the boat yourself.

As others have said its strange that Youi didn't insure it. Maybe try again. Many on this forum recommend Youi including me.

It is a requirement for my racing that I have comprehensive insurance with public liability for $5mil, $10mil preferred, and it is checked twice a year. For both my yacht and my racing dinghy.

Also many of the marina's are now requesting to see your insurance policy details when you pull up. I carry a laminated copy to produce for them, as showing them a copy on my phone was not acceptable.

I would prefer to self insure, but my boating uses make that impossible.

when I bought my boat I tried to insure it with club marine but they said they won't insure it without a out of water survey.
so I got the survey at a cost of close to $800 and when I send it off to club Marine they said they can't insure it because the survey said the anchor had to be mounted on the front of the boat also it did not have a bilge pump.
I quickly mounted the anchor on the front and fitted 2 bilge pumps and took some pictures and send them off to club Marine. After sending the photos they still said they won't insure my boat.?? so I insured it with youi $35,000 at a cost of $1300. then I thought about it and thought no way so I rang club Marine again and went off my head explaining how dare you ask me to get an out of water survey which cost me $800 and I fixed the two minor problems and sent you photos so the Boat is now sound. I told them I want my $800 back for my survey as youi we will insure it with out one, I don't need it you should pay for it
The boat is now insured with club Marine for $35,000 with a cost of $700

I am with YOUI. I was prepared to self insure my Tophat, but marina required third party/public liability. Cheaper than expected - no claims experience yet.
