Yesterday I pulled out the two 150 Ah AGM house batteries circa 2009 on Itchy, they were completely fried and one had created its own sculptures that would have had Cisco drawing world maps all over them. At 50cm long at 43kg in weight each they took a bit of manoeuvring and brute strength to remove so to make room I took out the starter battery as well. Put in a 100 Ah lead acid marine battery to temporarily replace the house batteries so that I at least have a working bilge pump and anchor light. Took a while to get all the circuits back on line and have resolved to get back and re-terminate all the wires before I go anywhere else. I must say it was nice to see my OzeFridge get down to -7 last night and still be at +2 this morning when the compressor kicked back in and the solar panels had topped up the battery again, haven't seen that for a while. Was thinking of going with the golf cart/forklift batteries discussed previously in the forum but will do more research first. Definitely need something with similar capacity but maybe in smaller lighter chunks.

Only problem was that when I reconnected the starter battery and tried to start the engine I had no response whatsoever, no lights no buzzer nothing. Now when I was disconnecting cables a little voice in my head suggested I take a before photo but it sounded so much like the little voice that tells me I don't need another beer that I ignored it. So I know the positive terminal had two red leads, one for the engine and one for the anchor winch but not so sure about the 3 heavy black leads that were lying there doing nothing and so were clamped onto the negative terminal of the stater battery, the anchor winch works so I know there is a circuit there. Looking at the manual there is a starter circuit fuse that may have blown on the engine, so I was thinking next time I get back I will disconnect the black leads lead find and replace the fuse and test for continuity on the leads from the engine back to the battery bay. Maybe one of those black leads is the earth for the house batteries? There wasn't a heavy earth lead on the house batteries, but maybe it was supposed to be there? Has anyone had any similar experiences with a 3GM30 if you play with the electrics, am I on the right track? Thanks

If you have connected the positive battery terminal to the engine circuit.
Find a test light and connect that to the positive engine lead and also to the black lead laying near your batteries if the test light comes on you have a completed circuit . this would tell you that black lead is the earth for the engine circuit

Well I am sorry I missed your call yesterday. Be assured I was doing something more important such as watching movies.

Why are you trying to blame your most trusty Yanmar 3GM30 for your dilemma when it is your total incompetence with anything electrical that is the root cause of your problem. Strewth.

Give me a call tomorrow and we shall see if we can sort you out. As if I do not have enough things to interrupt my waste of time Netflix viewing.
