Back to Perth and after looking for yachts (sold my Farr 740).
I made an offer for that yacht, I think it will be acepted. Any thought about it ? Has someone had a go at one? They look more popular East that here. I do not cruise much, maybe the odd day and nite at a nice beach using the yacht as a drinking platform but love racing.
The yacht is about 800 kg would a 3.5Hp be suitable, I want some thing as light as possible.

Nice boat!! Talk to brent @ Quantum sails over there, think he had a bit to do with this boat for a while.

Boat will be fine to sit somewhere on the Swan for a few drinks (with a tarp or boom tent!) and they go pretty well racing.

When I used to be there SoPYC had the best sportsboat fleet.

As for the outboard a 3hp Yammy would do just fine as a racing auxiliary (getting in and out of the marina) but if you want to motor into the Freo Doc then you prob want something like a 4-6hp and a long shaft.

As far as racing, I reckon you'll be around the older Thomspon 7's speed, don't expect to keep up with the Shaw's and Vipers, weight after all belongs in steam rollers!!!

How would you rate it handeling a bit of chop as I will be racing at Ocean Reef not in the river?

You will easily sit on 12knots+ with the kite up in a Perth seabreeze, about 6-6.5knots upwind.

Will handle the chop but might slam a bit. They had the national sportsboat champs off Freo with Shaw's and Vipers etc.

Legal to use tramps but you will all have to wear life jackets when racing as no rails.

I would recommend getting PFD 2 type dinghy sailing jackets not inflatables because when you fall in the water with an inflatable it is not a life jacket until you inflate it. once back on board and you deflate it, it's no longer a life jacket!!!

And by the look of the pics it doesn't have a reef in that N/S main, get one put in so that the top of the main is level with the hounds....for when it's really blowing!!

I recall the Magic 25s had twin Traps originally, so I thing the wings have been retrofitted to remove the need to trapeze ie 4 on the wings instead.

Hi all - Long time lurker, first time poster, so apologies for jumping in but it was the Magic that dunnit!.........

Raced one here in Brisbane for a season about ten years ago. Very exciting on a reach with the assymetrical spinaker out and hanging off the trapeze. in fact very exciting all round. I'd agree with others here that it is a big dinghy built to go fast. Not sure I'd call it a cruiser in any way shape or form. I'm sure you could go slow in it (as you could on an 18fter or 49er), but it always felt to me like it just wanted to go fast.

One of my mate said he could rebuild it and it would cost about $500 in steel and supplies...... maybe..... I use it as a jinker from the hard stand to the water and back.

Nice boat and nice buy, got some decent sails from memory....

Just be aware they need plenty of weight on the rail and weight fwd (especially upwind in sub 10 knots) to go well.

First race Sunday, light wind to 10 knot, crew of 3 very inexperienced... first sail ever for my mate sandwich maker. Coped a 19 min handicap and finished 2nd. The Etchel was still faster but I guess because I was not game to run my spinnaker. Massive grin on my face. I love my new toy!
