Hi everyone

We are relatively new to Sydney, have bought an old boat and just had our engine die...we had the Yanmar dealer go out and take a look and they quoted $9K as a ballpark to fix it. According to this dealer, our boat is too old to fit the dimensions of a new Yanmar motor (ours is a horizontal vs a vertical) without substantial re-jigging of the deck which we don't want to do.

I am wondering if anyone can recommend a good mechanic that we could ask for a 2nd opinion? It's a YANMAR YSM 8VGC.

We are looking for their opinion on whether there are other models of motors that will fit in our boat and/or a quote to fix the existing engine.

Thanks

Christine

Christine,
This is a difficult one. Easiest out is to buy another YSM, occasionally see them on eBay. They can be rebuilt of course but parts are expensive. Usual routine is to replace with one of the Kubota based engines. They are more compact but you may end up having to replace the shaft and prop to match. Check out the back of the Afloat magazine for ads relating to marine engines for engineers and engines. I'm not in Sydney and can not recommend anybody but just be aware there are some hopeless people out there in this game. The "new" yacht I bought last year came with an engine that had just been replaced, took me a couple of weeks to sort it out after a professional install.

What type of yacht? perhaps some one here has gone through the same routine with a sister ship.
