Looking at a very nice 34' yacht fully equipped with all safety gear. I have been out of sailing yachts for a while but still a confident crew. Anyone have an idea of how much a skipper would be to sail with me as the crew Melbourne -Perth during the summer months?

The Bight in summer? hmm would need to be a good boat going to weather!I've gone across both ways and summer and winter. Costs- plan the number of days and multiply by a couple of hundred bucks or miles sailed x$3 or 4. Usulally works out to be 80% of trucking it over. Just have to weigh up damage incurred on the sail over verss craning on and off truck.

I had planned on doing east to west to Perth. Was going to lay up at Ceduna SA starting late October/early November for a weather window. I think there's about 400 miles? of open water until you hit the archipelago of islands south of Esperance WA. Unfortunately I can't do it now. If you feel you're not up to the potential heavy weather sailing, or navigating the islands then I'd suggest prudence. Hire the skipper to skipper the vessel, and YOU be the crew. It's what I've done in the past and considered it money well spent.
Good luck.

I did part of the trip last Feb, but from Sydney, ended up bailing in Adelaide due to time constraints, the owner got sick and we were stuck in Robe for a week.
A profesional skipper was hired from Adelaide on, cant remember the cost, may have been $500 a day, where as the agent took some out of this.
But My mate and I came for free up to this point, and all the bad weather was in the Bass strait.
I was told that the rest was easy weather wise, you just need crew to do the shifts, and plan well, when the high moves into the bight. and have enough fuel on board to motor all the way just in case, the deck rails were lined with 20l diesel cans.
Was the most boring thing ever, to just have to cover ground, way out at sea.
you dont realy need a skipper just confidence, and it turned out the skipper hadnt done the crossing before either....
