I have a mooring in Five Dock bay, if I sell my yacht and buy a new yacht the same/slightly bigger size, can I keep and use the mooring?

Prior to considering purchase of a replacement vessel, licensee must obtain Roads & Maritime approval to ensure that substitute vessel can be accommodated in the existing location.

• An “Application to Change Vessel on Mooring” form and prescribed fee, must be lodged by the Mooring Licensee with Roads & Maritime for approval before another vessel can be placed on the mooring. The vessel must be registered in NSW or hold a NSW issued Certificate of Operation before it is placed on the mooring.

• The Mooring Licensee must promptly advise Roads & Maritime of any change to the Private Mooring Licence details. Change of address/ contact telephone number may be advised by phone, however all other changes must be advised in writing.

The answer from LooseChange is the official and correct response.

However, the unofficial answer to your question is 'yes' and my recommendation from recent experience is that you proceed on that basis, swap yachts and submit the appropriate paperwork (Transfer of vessel registration and Application to change vessel on mooring) a week or two after the event.

I recently upsized from 27' to 34' that way without any fuss. If the Boating Services Officer can go and look at the new boat on the mooring, they prefer that to having to look at hypothetical replacement vessels in the office.

No guarantee. That's just my two bob's worth. My biggest problem was selling the old boat in time for the new arrival. It helps to have a mate with a spare mooring and a miracle buyer who thought her husband would like a yacht for Christmas! (True story.)
