I`m moving to a new mooring close to shore and have been warned, as its near the boat ramp there is an element who raid boats at night.
Im thinking something like www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Auto-dialer-GSM-MMS-Home-Security-Burglar-Alarm-System-with-IR-camera-/261210908520?pt=AU_Home_Personal_Security&hash=item3cd1622768&_uhb=1
or

with http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pair-Outdoor-Indoor-5m-2-Beam-40m-Alarm-Wired-Active-Infrared-Fence-Detector-/330909096457?pt=AU_Home_Personal_Security&hash=item4d0bb81a09&_uhb=1

Anyone have a better idea? or other recommendation as to how to secure my boat.

Don't have the best boat in the area, lock it up securely, don't tell people you have a new expensive something or other onboard.
I keep getting told of thieves in our area but I haven't (yet) met anyone who has had their boat broken into.
Has anybody on the forum been broken into? What were the circumstances?

Yes It`s in Williamstown 5ks from Melbourne. I was paying over 3k a year for seposive security so I have no money issues for any unit to deter.

I like the idea off the alarm telling me its going off and sending a photo (im planning to put the camera up on the first spreader) only thing is will it make some scum think there is gold on board?

I plan to be moving my new vessel to Willy on thursday/friday.

I have a feeling that a security system would be pretty power hungry. Are we talking mains or swing?

I had my fishing vessel broken into several times tied up at the main wharf. Even with bright lights and pensioners watching on. A regular occurrence was amateur fishermen reversing their ute down the wharf and they would scoop live bait out of the tanks and load them into inflatable tanks in the back of the ute. I made lockable lids and they moved onto the next boat. This of course made me unpopular and they eventually did the same. The pensioners who were there fishing try to stop them but end up getting threatened. Never lost any electronics, mostly fishing gear and it was usually stuff they could not use like poling squids!
One Sunday afternoon I got a call from a local lad to tell me some low life was breaking in. Raced down the wharf with my eldest son. Wharf was crowded and the ars#wipe was still there! Stole knives and lures.
Local woman who worked for me as a deckhand was fishing off the boat one night. She watched this car drive down the wharf and parked along side a trawler at the end of the wharf. When they broke into the cabin she went and got her car and parked it at the T section of the wharf and called the police and then retired to my boat. Cops turned up and caught them in the park near the wharf, they had stolen a laptop and were armed with a pistol!
I have had my truck broken into and nothing taken but cash. I have also had my truck battery stolen by some amatuer fisherman who discovered his runabout had a flat battery. I have sprung another amatuer fisherman stealing an anchor of the deck of one of the boats one morning.
Saturday afternoon during the football season I had my dinghy stolen off the boat several times by our indigenous friends on their way home to the mission, even when I started putting the oars down below.

I have had no problem with my yacht on a mooring. Many years ago we had a Sydney based team turn up and they broke into a few moored boats but they were mainly involved with a water based break in of the bowling club. There is not much you can do to avoid professionals.

Aerials and antennas usually indicate what's in side a yacht but really there is not much of a market for this stuff these days. Most crooks are after cash or stuff that's easy to get rid of. Use a mooring and have your mooring next to expensive boats. There is always a pensioner watching. Get to know the locals.
Expensive anchors are the most common stolen item off boats.

At the minimum, go to Jaycar for a pressure pad alarm.$49.00.

They are self contained, running on 12V lithium battery ($14, mean to last 3 years).
I forget the dB level it puts out (14db?), but it's enough to make your ears pulse for sometime after.

All good if someone's around to hear it, but at least the buggers might get a fright and move on.

There's also a self contained motioned sensored unit (from Bushnell?) used often for bird watching/surveillance.
It runs on about 8 d cells, and records either images of still photo's to sd card.

Whitworths had a unit similar to OP's ebay ones for about $160 that you inserted a sim card and it would dial preset number when vessel was moved beyond a boundary. Combined that with $1 sim from TPG.

Ideally we need a motion/pressure pad tripped alarm that will activate and dial your number as well as saving or streaming footage, plus at least 1 camera, with night vision. Depending on your own boat, the biggest hurdle when on a mooring will power usage.

In reality, Images are going to be average anyhow, think about what you get from 12/240V hd cameras in shop security.

As someone who's had their boat basically stripped, in the end sometimes it just doesn't pay to have a nice boat or that appears looked after.

Also, change your typical deck hatch levers to ones with no external handles, just the round pintles instead. Maxwell replaced all of mine free of charge.
You may lose the re-entry ability if inverted, but it may help you sleep at night.

This would be a first step before you install something more advance.
I installed a few of these on boats, backyards etc.
Works as a charm, no power usage, only when activated.

This is a dark switch, connected directly from the battery,
through the dark switch ( it's very sensitive, position is not critical )
to some low consumption brigh LED ligt or lights.
Very small box rated 3A. Guess 12watts LED assembly is OK.

I on the outer field (At the moment) due to an unknown person dropping there mooring in my lease, parks tell me first week of june before I can move back to WTF OO9 I cant even get to my boat currently.

Do you have 24/7 internet on your boat? No thats why Im planning to use GSM network $40 a year with Amaysim cheep insurance, Im tossing up using Wireless Home GSM Telephone Security Burglar Alarm System with a Water Detector it would give me a warning if water got in, but it will not take photos like the other one.

If I add a strobe alarm and dual beam to set off the alarm if someone walks in the cockpit

What about a detector for when your boat is stolen or wanders off! Something like these that call your phone although this one probably does not.

I don't think anyone will steal it, its more about trying to avoid damage from scum that do more damage than the value they steal
