Coming into Summer, the mozzies are out and after trying many things, the wife is still not happy.
Besides spray on products, what do you use effectiveley to keep off the mosquitos and fly swarms of the boat? Coils, zappers?

The ones that heat up a little pad.
not sure if you can get 12 volt ones at the shops. Someone converted a 240 one for me years ago. Worked well, handled Trinity inlet Cairns no problem. Seemed to keep them away from the cockpit too.

Screen all openings, including vents, with the fine [called Queensland screen in NSW] fly screen.

I usually close up main openings around 4pm. [You can exit and enter as required]
I have velco [hooks] sewn onto the screens and use the soft part with self sticking put around the openings.

If you get bitten, use a cup of tea to heat up a spoon, check it won't burn you, then hold on a bite, may have to do it a couple of times.
The point of this is that the heat breaks down the protein use by the mig/mozzie.

Using the above I've never had any problem with bities

PS I have never used a mozzie coil !!!!!!!

problem with the screen is that while it mught stop mozzies it also stops air circulation and on a yacht with no AC that is a killer. So that is not an option.
I have seen those electronic cartridge type repellent devices, but I have also heard those are expensive to run, since one can wear through a crtridge in day, each costing up to $12 each to refill. So, I have not gone down that road.

The one i had was just a plug in the wall job for $10 and the pads work out less than a dollar a night. I dont remember it using much power but havnt pulled it out in a long time.
Computer fans mounted above your bunk are good, keeps you cool and seem to keep the mozzies off too.

got 2 fans around our beds and I can tell you that the mozzies here are learnt to not care. They eventually get you somewhere.

Fans....

Strong enough that the mozzies can't fly through, overhead are best, but difficult in a lot of boats (there are slim profile guarded ones available).
Lived in northern PNG, with rainfall in the 5-6m a year, so mosquitos all year round, spent most time in indoor/outdoor area without screens. but we used stainless steel powerful floor units, plus overhead when watching TV etc in the open entertainment area. (both on the aft deck of the boat and at home)

Only ever used aircon mid afternoon on a very hot day, or bedrooms for a hour or so to cool room down, then good output overhead fans. all night.

I'm a big fan of fans. Ryobi 18v job is a winner has a water mister, same battery that works the drill, grinder, torch vacuum, bla bla, portable/ cockpit, galley, bunk ( proably don't want the mist in bed, that's your call ) easy charge via small inverter or the 12v to 18v charger ? Don't know how but it works.
+ Screens and coils if the bugs are real thick, insect spray on ya screens helps too.

I was recommended the Mortein coils (the one that comes with 30 coils fro $6.50 at Coles). After being fed on by the mozzies last night I have decided to trial it, suppose to cover up to 20 sqm and one coil burns for 8 hours. Let see if we can avoid using any sort of lotions. We smell diesel already, let's not add another smell to the mixture.

Mosquito Coils: Beware of these coils some years ago I used them in the Mildura region. I learnt by mistake nothing wrong with the coils worked so well. However be sure that they are placed where nothing can be in contact with them. The time I used them they somehow came into contact with the portable radio cassette player. Melted the battery plate. Recently a house in Brisbane was burnt down through a coil so the story goes from the new team

Be very careful of the coils and ensure good ventilation.
Many moons ago at Inverloch I placed a couple of coils in the van.
Unbeknownst to me the then wife decided to close all windows as we went to bed.
An hour later I awoke feeling very sick. The kids aged 7-8 were extremely groggy.

After 30 minutes in fresh air everyone felt better. I thought that I may have had to call an ambo but luckily not.
Some toxic crap in them coils!

Thank you for the caution and yes, I am aware of the burning nature of the coils. That is why I have stayed away from the coils for so long. They stink. But they worked last night, I hung the coils by the helm and before bed and shutting the cocpit door for the night I took it in and extinguished the coil by submerging in water. I've left the coil in the sink.
I am drying the coils now, will see if I can reuse whats left tonight.

nswsailor - don't know about worrying of caron monoxide. These coils burn slowly and there is plenty of ventillation through the coach area, so even if there is CO2 emission, it should be negligible amount to worry about. There is more to worry about the fire hazard.

An old remedy from FNQ:
-Mix a tablespoon of Portland cement with a large glass of rum and drink, avoid drinking water for at least 6 hours, more rum is okay.
-Repeat daily until mosquitoes are no longer affecting you.
-If symptoms persist sail south until there are no more mosquitoes, watch out for the icebergs though.

but there is one golden rule that overrides all (if you are married): happy wife, happy life..guess who gets the most bites and who gets to hear the complaints?
