So what are the best places to sail around in Tassie that result in nice anchorages. Could be there in a couple of weeks time. Bring out the bucket list please.

By nice anchorage I mean good holding and minimum swell (if any at all)

Where i live on the Huon River there is always somewhere where you can shelter from the weather and anchor but depending where you are if the winds change through the night you may have to go to the opposite side of the river

MAST do boating guides that are $3.30 each that have basic information in them or if you want something more comprehensive that covers all of the state you can buy a Tasmanian Anchorage Guide that is published by the Royal that is $65.00

To be honest i have only sailed in the Huon/Channel area but a lot of people say these are the best cruising waters in Tassie

port sorell beautiful sandy river sheltered anchorages sand bottom nice swimming coffee shops etc also national park and walks all from your dinghy.
tamar is great .

Tassie is beautiful but I think boating would be restricted to a few months a year. I was there in Febuary a few years back and when the wind was blowing it was cold, I hate to think what July would be like.

Maybe summer in Tassie and winter in Qld??

I am at the bottom of Tassie and sail all year round

I am originally from Cairns and enjoy the cool weather but it may not be for everyone

In winter we get a lot of beautiful clear sunny days and it is nice sailing down the river with snow on the hills in the distance

Summer is my favourite time of the year down here

Not because it is warmer but because the days are so long and i particularly enjoy going for a sail after a day at work

Yesterday i got home from work and we left the mooring at 5.30 and returned at 9pm and it was still daylight

Thanks for the info Don and Aus005. I've left it a bit late to buy any online books (only got the midnight phone call 4 days ago) but I would image we'll be able to pick up something in Hobart or Devonport if we need to. I'm only the cabin boy on the trip but I would image the captain has already picked some places of interest. At least now I might be able to throw in a bit of bull$hit based on fact as the beers go down and we start talking about where to go next.

What's this about swimming aus005, North Qld blood runs in my veins and the thought of Tassies chilled water make me shiver as I write this. Maybe some rum will give me the courage.

swimming here is great the water was 22degrees yesterday the river has a 3m tide and the water on an incoming tide heats up to like a bath as it comes in over the the hot sand.

this down load for $10 is great it is a cruising guide of tassie really good value.
by the way i noticed you are a kitesurfer port sorell would be one of the best kiting spots in tassie if you get this way we can organise you a kit i am sure

A topic right up my alley!!

Flinders Island is a must. Something like 100 beaches and only 800 residents, and that's before you include all the small islands!! Amazing fishing (700mm flatty anyone?), great food and people. Just watch out for the snakes on some of the small islands, 7ft Tiger Snakes aren't fun in a small dinghy as they swim!!

I might be a bit biased but The Tamar River (northern reaches) is beautiful and if you need service work then then Launceston at the southern end of the river has a great slipway and chandleries.

And if you're coming to tassie you HAVE to visit Windlass Bay!!!

When i lived there i dreamt the same summer in tassy winter north qld
