Finally i got my boat. Just put deposit on Compass 28 and owner did accept my offer. Now i have to get her out for spin and done survey. After that she's mine. Later on have to install solar panel and Bimini. For navigation i am planning to use my iPad and hand held GPS.
If anyone have any good advice, i would greatly appreciate.

This has been covered before, but the following gps recievers with an ipad and the navionics app should work well for you. Eliminating the need for network connection.

I'm not sure if these are the cheapest prices/models.

and for all the cool kids

For a really good but cheap chart plotter you might consider this.

I bought the 8" tablet ALDI had on sale for $169 +$20 for the leather case, car charger and ear phones.

Then there was the 32gb micro SD card for $25 and I bought the ALDI $5 mobile starter pack and the $35 Unlimited Bolt On , (UNLIMITED calls within A us + 5gb data); YES it is a phone as well with a 5mp camera on back and web can on front.

So we are up to $254 so far, then we add a $13.99 Google store download of the Avionics App for the whole of Australia, NewZealand, Norfolk Is. and Chatham Is. and we are now looking for a waterproof case which can be bought from Whitworths for about $40.

For just over $300 anybody can have the smickest (ability to edit charts with your own observations including photos), quickest (download charts for they whole of Aus, NZ in about 3 hours ) and slickest (full featured, ie layered vector charts where extra detail is added as you zoom in which is not a feature of raster charts).

I tried searching but got not much on this. Do you need this gps add on even with the later version ipads ie > Ipad 4. I was under the impression that even without network connection the Ipad 4 would still use the inbuilt GPS rather than the version 3 and eariler which only use the phone tower triangulation

Oh mate I couldn't tell you, I just have a iphone 4s. Give it a try without. Cisco is on the money with getting a waterproof case, saltwater isn't very friendly towards electronics. If you want to spend a bit more money on a case then the lifeproof brand are good, that's is what I use for my iphone.

Also if you give Melbourne based energymatters.com.au a call they should be able to free quote you some solar options, I'm not sure if they sell panel mounts for yacht railing though?! They do stock quality brands of panels/batteries and you may save on postage costs if they let you pick up. They have been in the game for a while.
