I went into the Marrickville Services NSW to apply for a mooring in Five Dock Bay. Apparently the authorised witness to id me has to be a JP. WTF. A JP just because I want a mooring. No JP in sight so will have to revisit.
Gee I love Public Service bureaucracy!

Go to the Rozelle Maritime. They have a JP onsite ... pretty sure, I think. I vaguely remember waiting for someone in the back office to come and sign my app.

Absolutely second this - there's usually only one other person waiting in line there too, so it's quicker all round.

In addition, if you file at any of the Service NSW sites, they'll send it to their "processing" team, with a 6 week turnaround....and after all that time, where do they send it? Rozelle.

But don't worry, they'll still drag their feet. Took about 2 weeks (with me constantly calling) to hook me up with the local BSO. Another week or two before he could set an appointment to go out to do the mud map (and he was surprised that it was a hassle for me to do it in the middle of the day on a weekday). Oh, and then the day of, when he was half an hour late, I called him to find out he was in Middle Harbour and wouldn't be able to make it that day.

By contrast, the moment I had the mud map (as in, another 2 weeks of me chasing him to email me the file he modified while I was with him on the boat), I called a mooring contractor (Jubilee Marine). This was around noon. By 4pm, my mooring was laid (Peter is based just around the corner in Henley).

Yeh, moorings are fun!

Lucky I didn't get that mooring application in. Five Dock Bay dinghy storage is not too good and I don't want to use an inflatable as a tender.
I had a look this afternoon at mooring areas in Drummoyne and Birchgrove/Balmain.
Blowing a hooley out there but apart from north Birchgrove which was pretty exposed the rest seem ok in strong sou westers.
Parking at Drummoyne along the waterfront near the sailing club and further up was almost non existent. Apparently the staff at Birkenhead Pt shops now have to pay for parking and fill the surrounding streets instead.
Parking at the Birchgrove dinghy access points was pretty good.
Do any Seabreezers have experience of these mooring areas? Weather constraints, dinghy security and parking availability?

I highly recommend Woodford bay. Not so far from Drummoyne. About 10 min drive. Go check it out. Sheltered, safe, less riffraff likely to steal anything. Places for dinghies. It's a real good spot.

I like Woodford Bay but too far from where will be living. If we end up in Leichhardt it will be a 40 minute drive (google maps estimate), and the traffic will be the s..s. I was over the 40 minute drive from Chatswood to Pittwater pretty quickly.
Five Dock Bay and Birchgrove/ Drummoyne are 10-15 minutes from Leichhardt.

From Leichhardt via Balmain road to Woodford its 20. Would be 40 maxxxxx on a bad day. I do it on a motorbike so it's a bit different. the busy section between Leichhardt and Drummoyne/Woodford bay is rozelle , city west link.(which you avoid!) and Drummoyne itself. From Drummoyne to Woodford usually takes me 10 min Via river road. I dunno. I love Woodford and often drive these routes, albeit on a motorcycle Most of the time.
Youre leaving paradise to live in the thick of it all !! the moorings around five dock and Drummoyne look very exposed to me.
Lets say like this. : Norton street. Across to Balmain road. Left at Victoria rd(Balmain) you should drive it sometime and check how long it takes. It's really not far to Drummoyne or Woodford bay. Good luck though. In finding a great spot for morningbird for her rebirth!

Hey MorningBird,

Depends where you want to sail I guess. My mooring is over at Betts Bay, which is just on the other side of Gladesville Bridge from Drummoyne. Really quiet, sheltered from the wind, just the occasional bit of ferry wake. But a nice beach to land on with zero waitlist at the moment. My only drama is that I race out of Balmain Sailing Club, so it's a bit far if I'm running late. Very glad I have an outboard now! However, it's not that far upstream if you're just heading out for a day on the water. Parking's pretty good, they've just finished a new set of bays for the ferry terminal, with more coming.

Drummoyne Bay is ok, fairly easy parking in nearby streets, but not brilliant for landing your dinghy. Some slippery rocks and a sharply rising seabed means it can be a bit dicey getting on & off. Only 1 on the waitlist, and a bit closer.

I've also borrowed (shh) a mooring at P/R Hunters Hill in the past. Much more bouncy out on the mooring and a bit more exposed to sail on/off of, but the dinghy situation is pretty good. There's steps leading into and out of the water, with boards laid across them to make putting the dinghy in easier. A shed up the top and convenient trees to chain up to.

Birchgrove is "your'e dreaming" territory anyways. I think about 3 moorings get given out a year and there's 26 on the list at the moment. Plenty of sailing club members, not enough space.

Greenwich baths is good for dinghy parking, and closer again to the city, but terrible for car parking. It'd be great for a family though - dump the wife & kids at the baths for a bit of time on the beach, then row out to the boat!

Yes, we are moored between Spectacle Island and the end of Queen Victoria st where you can keep your dinghy. Its called Drummoyne east I think.
We were lucky when we went around with the boating officer, he was very accomodating as we wanted a mooring near the dinghy storage area.
Parking can be difficult sometimes but if you have a load of gear you can temporarily remove the bollards to the park and reverse your car all the way down to the edge of the beach. At times you may have to park up to 200 metres away. But other times you will get very close.
It is quite sheltered there as well, I have never seen very rough conditions there.
Never had a problem with dinghy security although we do chain ours up.

Thanks all. Been off line as I am in Victoria at the Winton Historic race meet. My other passion is old sports cars and this meet is very good.
I think the northern end of Drummoyne might be the go. A bit further north from where keensailor suggests I saw a small access for the dinghy at the end of Drummoyne ave. Not brilliant but should be workable. I will also look closer to his spot.
Yeah, Birchgrove is probably a dream. The waiting list is long but the parking and jetties there are very good.

If you decide Rea reserve (northern end of Drummoyne Ave. the small park on the right) is for you, l am sure something could be worked out near the wall where my tender is living.
What size tender have you got?
There is no waiting time in that bay as far as the latest report shows.

We bought the house in Leichhardt and MB is going in for a bum clean and a couple of bits and pieces in a couple of weeks. Then to get into the Harbour. I want to get Joe Walsh to do my rig before Lord Howe.

sirg, I liked that spot. Maybe I could meet you down there one day to talk about moorings, parking, dinghies etc. My tender is small, light (a bit like me except I'm no longer light) and battered. Worst dinghy in the stack.

I tried your suggestion. It took me 15-20 minutes up Balmain Rd in the traffic. I spoke to Chris the BSO and he suggested Drummoyne area. It is close and I am going to join Drummoyne sailing club.
